8800GTS 512, poor 3dmark06 :-(

You have to post your default 3dmark06 score dude, it's a standard that everyone uses as a basic comparrison, 8700 could be spot on for the resolution you are using. Run 3dmark06 on default settings and re-post your scores, we can then determine if there's a problem...

With my similar setup (only cpu overclocked) it gets 12509 @ the standard resolution, 1280x1024? So if your running at the standard resolution with a stock cpu I would expect it to still be over 10k.

Noob Q: Overclocking the CPU might make the 3dMark score improve, but will it have much effect in games?

Crysis is very CPU dependant - more overclocking/better cpu = more FPS
- (not just mainly the graphics card these days)

the story is mostly the same with most modern games out there

how the hell do you manage this!?

i have a QX9650 (stock) and 2 BFG 8800 GTX OC2 (stock) and only manage just shy of 17k!

Overclocked CPU and GPU (maybe) a decent overclock can add a few thousand to your default clocks score. With your setup and a little overclock your should hit around the 20k mark (someone will correct me if im wrong)

OK, here are my 3dmark06 test results, unfortunately i cannot run at the default resolution due to the native res of my 19" widescreen monitor - so i have had to run @ 1152x864, which, I believe, should be slightly less taxing than the default.....

drum roles please......and the results are:::

Despite your actual 3DMark06 score your FPS are good. Showing that 3DMark06 is quite dependant on CPU speed.

Below is my old q6600 @ 3ghz and an overclocked 8800GTX - score was 13564:

Graphics Tests
1 - Return to Proxycon 46.06 FPS
2 - Firefly Forest 46.9 FPS
CPU Tests
CPU1 - Red Valley 1.58 FPS
CPU2 - Red Valley 2.3 FPS
HDR Tests
1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 51.68 FPS
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 59.27 FPS

As you can see... not that much better than yours and if you clock that e6300 you'll be laughing. I'd say with your board (decent model) you'd see 2.8ghz quite easily.

As far as i'm concerned just get on with a bit of gaming and don't worry about that score! ;)

It's you cpu holding you back. From memory my Athlon gets 2800 in cpu test.

However, as gt-junkie points out your framerates aren't too far behind and at the end of the day that's what's counts in games. Benchmarks mean nothing.

Either overclock your cpu (which you should do anyway ;)) or if your not an overclocker just enjoy your games and don't sweat over a synthetic benchmark.

I get about 11900 ish, with the spec in my sig. So CPU speed does indeed have a massive impact on 3dmark06 scores. Best advice I can give you is to ignore the score, and just look at the framerate (in which case yours look fine)

Thanks all - i've finished with the benchmarking, now I'll get on with some gaming - if I notice a prob i'll just OC the CPU or maybe upgrade to a 6600 quad!!! There is always something else to covet....

Eh?
If it wont go lower than 1440, how the heck do you install an OS? (or for that matter use any bootdiscs)?

Nothing like "progress" is there

Because a 1440x900 screen can't fit 1280x1024 on it (not enough height). Some may scale.

They will take lower res fine though, for example 1280x720 or 800x600, it will just stretch to fit the screen.

All,

OK, did the right thing and upgraded my e6300 to a Q6600 Go thingy - score has gone from circa 8700 to 12700 (albeit @ 1400 X 900).

I didn't expect that much of a hike, thanks to all for advise.
