9/11: the Falling Man
9:00pm - 10:30pm
Channel 4
Of the many terrible, abiding images from the destruction of the World Trade Center on 11 September, one proved so shocking that, after limited publication, it all but vanished. It became known as The Falling Man, a stark picture of a man falling, headfirst, after he had jumped from the burning upper reaches of one of the stricken towers. But, thanks to the efforts of a journalist who refused to join in the condemnation, and who saw the picture as almost a monument to humanity, the equivalent of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, it has achieved a strange, iconic status. This brilliant, often unbearably moving, documentary follows Esquire journalist Tom Junod's efforts to identify the man in the photograph. Junod had been touched by the picture when it was first published, and to him its power remained strong, despite America's tacit, collective decision that it had no place among the heroic images that eventually came to represent that black day and its aftermath.
Is anyone else watchig this.
