9/11: the Falling Man

9:00pm - 10:30pm

Channel 4

Of the many terrible, abiding images from the destruction of the World Trade Center on 11 September, one proved so shocking that, after limited publication, it all but vanished. It became known as The Falling Man, a stark picture of a man falling, headfirst, after he had jumped from the burning upper reaches of one of the stricken towers. But, thanks to the efforts of a journalist who refused to join in the condemnation, and who saw the picture as almost a monument to humanity, the equivalent of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, it has achieved a strange, iconic status. This brilliant, often unbearably moving, documentary follows Esquire journalist Tom Junod's efforts to identify the man in the photograph. Junod had been touched by the picture when it was first published, and to him its power remained strong, despite America's tacit, collective decision that it had no place among the heroic images that eventually came to represent that black day and its aftermath.

Is anyone else watchig this.

Might see if it's worth a watch. If it isn't I'm just going to bung on Schindlers List.

Thank god for this 'heads up'. I would have forgotton about this otherwise. Cheers. :)

It looks interesting stuff and is bound to create a fair amount of discussion.

Damn it! There's a programme about Tony Martin on the other side at the same time, and I don't have a VCR.

Ha at least you get a choice!

We get Dalziel and Pascoe instead of the Tony Martin programme :(

Just flicked over now.....very interesting and a lot of speculation to certain events on that day will always be around and unanswered...

Now that you mention Tony Martins programme, did anyone catch the news earlier with the producer of the show? It was incredible him trying to justify the payment the burglar got for participating in the show and him saying, well, Tony Martin is a crook and he got paid by the mirror so what's the difference?

Idiot. I'm on the big mans side to be honest. TM quite rightly said, 'If someone is about the mash your head with a brick, do you stand there, or do you panic?'

Very insightful stuff, really makes me try to think what it was like, making the choice to either choke on the deadly smoke or to jump to certain death :(

It is truly so awful and so hard to comprehend what it was like for these people. Very few things on TV move me to tears, this does.

If you were in that situation what would you do?

If i was 100% sure i was going to die, then i would jump, merly try and forget everything and just enjoy the "adrenaline rush", if you understand me?

Watching it, The man who took the photos is trying to justify taking them so much its almost as if he knows hes done a awful thing.
