9800X3D RAM buying guide by Buildzoid

Does anyone know if and how you can manually decrease the DRAM frequency through the Gigabyte bios

For example go down to 5600 or 4800 from 6000

Yes you can set manual DRAM speed on nearly all boards.

I don't know Gigabyte BIOSes well enough to tell you where exactly it is, a quick Google suggests it's on the main advanced page and it's probably the system memory divider option or one of the two below that.

Are you able to change the frequency when EXPO is turned on or does EXPO make it run at the fastest frequency

EXPO is just a set of overclocking profiles baked into the memory that you can choose from within the motherboard's BIOS.

If you use EXPO, it will just use whatever speed is set for your chosen profile. Note that some sticks only have one EXPO profile.

If you leave EXPO turned on and choose a manual frequency, it will keep very similar settings (voltages, timings, etc), but I don't know if all boards support this option.

although adjacent, is there a buying consensus for motherboards for the 9800x3d?

I'm getting the itch to upgrade for real.

I guess I should have read this thread before buying.. But luckily it seems this Gskill 2x16gb 6000 cl30 fits the bill. Been having a lot of trouble with posting with my corsair cl36 stuff since upgrading to the 9800x3d.. I hope this fixes my issue..

What is the exact product code for that RAM? Is it 4 DIMMS?

I've updated the bios several times over the last month, I think they're beta ones. F32g currently. It's a Gigabyte Gaming X AX mobo. A revision of which that appears doesn't seem to officially support the 9800x3d..

Ram. I don't know if it's micron. is it written on the sticks?

CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL36 AMD EXPO Intel XMP iCUE Compatible Computer Memory – Grey (CMK32GX5M2D6000Z36)

And even with expo off I still encounter post issues at the dram stage light. But today it turned on 1st boot. Sometimes it even complains that the bios needs to be reset. Really annoying problem. I hope it's not the mobo really because it's such a pita to swap. At least the ram is easy!

There are multiple revisions of that motherboard and it comes in B650, X670 and B650M variations on top of the revisions.

They should all have support for the 9088X3D since Gigabyte would have included the latest AGESA version in each BIOS buuutttt Gigabyte are weird and it might be a weird BIOS that needs fixed.

Looking at your BIOS version you're either on X670 or Z790 but I think I can guess which one lol.

So sorry, it's the B650! And rev 1.2.
There was a lot of drama a month ago because they updated the 1.5 feature spec to include the 9800x3d but not the lower revs. But yes I guess the bios update proves it's supported.. But maybe not until the bios is non-beta? Who knows..

what are some good brands for DDr5 these days? Is it still the same brands you were accustomed to seeing during the DDr4 days?

I figured as much, good to know they're still making good products
The brand itself is not important.

What is important is what memory chips were used - it used to be Samsung B die with DDR4, it’s now Hynix A die or M die with DDR5.

Most RAM modules are just rebranded mass produced modules that come out of the OEM factory and get a brand heatsink and sticker applied.

Just get any 6000CL30 kit as Minis said, doesn’t matter which brand.
