980TI Oc'd Keeps pace with 1080.

Nobody realistically expected them to be that much faster than 980Ti. They seems to be 10-30% faster depending on game/resolution etc. Pretty in line with the 980, 780, 680 and so on.

As always, if you have the top end from the last gen it's probably not worth upgrading unless you absolutely must have the best.

The 1070 is much more interesting for lots of people who skipped a gen or never buy the top end (myself included).

Expected them to be faster because they were a die shrink.. In the past when we had a die shrink it wasn't this tiny "usual" speed bump. I could understand if it was the same manufacturing process but it isn't. They are just milking it now to the max.

65% is probably already above what most people can bear in terms of noise level,

My MSI 980ti games at about 80% fan, and that noise level is fine for me, I simply don't notice it while gaming and the PC is about 3 feet away from me with holes in the case adjacent to the GPU.
Granted, if I put it up to 100% that is quite loud.

Well if have expected it to be faster than a 980, the card it is directly replacing - but wouldn't have assumed it would also be faster than a 980ti

This time round the 1070 is a very interesting card, and the value for money sweetspot killer card for anyone who hasn't upgraded for a while.

Personally I did feel like the 1080 was a very overpriced letdown, but now seeing some of the AIB card prices not quite so much. Still all very meh to me though as I've got SLI 980Ti's and will be sticking with them for a good while I think.

and why not, why give the people 2x the performance and sell it to them once,
when you can sell it to them 4 times at 25% increments ;)

45% is as high as I will go on my Strix fan profile, it sits 3 feet away also in a low noise case.

Nope, I have not been in disagreement with Radox, and basing on the information that he's given, the average of 2000MHz max clock on that 65% fanspeed is probably what most people will get.

What I have been saying since the beginning was that if people want the 1080 to be at the same performance that those reviews that put the 1080 performance in the best light (which most have the clock running at 2150MHz), people would be best wait for custom cards, and it has far higher chance of doing than than the blower type cooler including the FE cooler could. triss was insisting that the FE can do 2150MHz if running it at 100%, but I said nobody will run their card's fanspeed at 100% for everyday uses...it is simply TOO LOUD.

If you look at my post you will see i mentioned radox's card as we already had him doing 2000Mhz at 65% and he has ran 2100 in single card.
I also said we need a larger sample size as we dont have enough results, He may of been very lucky and got a great card.
BTW over 65% fan speed doesnt necessary means 100% it could be any variables between those and 65% fan speed doesnt mean its the same as 65% from another card so without listening to said card its no easy to judge.
Just because you dont like the noise doesnt mean its not real world for others plenty people play with headphones on.
Noise is a very subjective thing we found this with the 290x some made a aggressive fan curve and were happy others couldnt stand it.

The performance of the 1080 on reviews cannot be found on the FE card unless people were gaming with their PC case opened or for no more than 10 mins; to get the same performance that are show in the reviews, people need 1080 with custom cooler.

BTW this was the quote that sparked it off and made no mention of 2150MHz or reviews that put the 1080 performance in the best light. Most reviews of seen show the card at stock with also overclocked results thrown in. Overclocked results have always varied from card to card and are never guaranteed especially at a certain fan speed.

When I play some games on my Titan X, I don't bother overclocking and the card throttles, frames are so high anyway, it doesn't matter but another game that benefits from the extra frames, I run a 1:1 fan curve to stop throttling. I know this happens and it doesn't bother me and the fan noise is acceptable. When I bench for review purposes, I put a 1:1 fan curve on to stop the card from throttling and again, this is acceptable. The only time I have ever used a 100% fan was for benching. That is too loud for everyday use though, so hence why it was only used for benching but truthfully, there wasn't a need to run a 100% and the 1:1 fan curve see's my fan get to 75% and seems to cope quite nicely with keeping temps in check. Nobody needs to run 100% fan to maintain a decent overclock and a 1:1 fan curve will keep the temps in check. Not a dig at you btw and more an explanation of how to keep temps under control with the minimum of noise :)

I had to laugh at this months PC Gamer. They had a reveal on the GTX 1xxx's and said the 1080 would be £400 and the 1070 £250 and based it on straight £-$.

Be interesting if they retract that in the next issue.

See ive been tryng to keep up with hardware before I buy a new system again. Last build was 2004  I'm using it just now.

I thought these new 1080 card were going to be £400 ish but I se they are near £600-650

when you see them in the USA $599.......
