980ti or wait for pascal???

But this makes no sense...

He can afford a 980ti so why does being skint mean he waits ?

He gets pascal mid range for 350 ?

Why would he get a slower card ?

didnt read his post only the thread topic..

and how do u know mid range pascal will be slower?

u working for nvidia nowadays?

Wow I've started a huge debate and exactly what I wanted lots of very valid opinions that will help me decide.

My train of thought was this, I previously had a 780ti and then maxwell was released I upgraded to the 980 which had the same performance of the 780ti and then some with amazing OC potential. Now if history follows suit the 1080 or X80 or whatever it's gonna be called should technically have the same performance as the 980ti and then some with OC potential as it's also a die shrink.

I'm not one to normally wait for a card but with GTC a week away and the potential launch of pascal a month away it's a tough call especially with games like the division and fallout 4 put that I'm eager to play.

Its also a good point that maxwell will drop in price when pascal is released meaning I could technically grab a pair of 980ti's for a nice price instead of opting for just the one (I think the wife would divorce me if I spent £1200 on graphics cards)

I've got an itchy wallet and a dining room full of pc components calling to me which doesn't help my decision lol

I would give it a week until GTC then if nothing significant get a Ti. Still a very powerful card and will last until the 1080 or 1080Ti.

The die shrink will bring some very nice improvements. Basically more transistors + cores into the same space. Hense 1080 may have 4000 cores. Titan may have 6000. Double what previous gen cards have. I would at the very least wait for GTC in a few days. Hopefully for some solid info.

Your assuming that midrange pascal will beat top tier maxwell....

whilst assumption is the mother of all......

The past teaches us that it is very likely to be the case, albeit marginally.

The 780ti and the 980 were pretty close the 980 winning out on ram.

but the 780 ti went from 350+ to less than 250 in a matter of days on the MM.

I bought a 980Ti last month purley because the offering from nVidia or AMD are going to only match or slightly beat a 980Ti (AT STOCK) now we dont know how well they will overclock and most 980Ti seem to clock at 1450-1500 as long as you have the cooling to go with it. So 980Ti overclock very well. Based on that i went with the 980Ti and can say im glad i did. I don't plan on buying a card that is just going to match or slightly beat what has been out for a while. I want a worth while upgrade and ill be looking at 2017 for that when the big cards come from nVidia and AMD

Fair enough the pascal may be slightly cheaper but the extra cost ive paid ive enjoyed the card during the time before release. So far it's just speculation no one knows how much or how fast. Just guessing and educated guessing at best.

So depends if you can play the waiting game. I couldn't!

I doubt pascal will be much of an upgrade in performance, but i big upgrade in energy efficiency.

Wait until after gtc this weekend and then maybe another week and grab a 980ti when the price drops, it's what i'm doing i'll be getting another to either sli or just replace my zotac, which you shouldn't get.

Thats what ebay is for :p

You reckon that when pascal tech gets revealed in a few days with no firm release the MM is going to be flooded with 980ti cards?

Lol

Nope!

Hi, just if someone wonder what the Step Up is. If you are originally purchaser of a regular card with KR Part number you can upgrade your card within the first 90 days. This do mean we take the originally card back and refund you the full purchase price when you want to go for a higher chipset. You then only need to pay the difference of what you payed to the price of the new card in our online store. Generelly we do also allow to remove/replace cooler on our graphics cards.

So the EVGA step up allows for upgrading to a slower card? Even though the name is higher?

It should be called the EVGA sideways program.:p

Bigger number, new shiny, hmmmmmmm:D

easy what's your problem? You've been telling people nobody knows then you keep posting like you know the coming card will be slower or the same.

Fair enough, I think the 1080 has the potential to be better than a 980ti, if it has good overclocking headroom and of course driver support will focus on the newer card. At first I don't think there'll be much in it, but a few months down the line we might see it pulling ahead.

That being said I'm not sure it needs to be quicker, there was a tonne of people who upgraded from 780's and 780ti's to 970's and 980's and the difference in game wasn't even noticeable.

I bought a 970 then returned it when I benched it against a 780 EVGA SC which I had originally bought for 140 quid :p

780 3GB v 970 3.5gb but 110 quid difference lol
