990 Pro slow speeds

New WD black sn850x drive arrived and has sorted the problem, now recognised at gen 4 and getting 7,000 read speeds, sending the 990 pro back. Thanks all for your advice
interesting. I'm going to check out my 980s on the back of this. What software were you using? Out of interest what was Samsung magician reporting?

Crystaldiskmark and Samsung magician were both reporting read speeds of 3,300 and bios detecting as gen3.

New WD drive detected in bios as gen4 and read speeds of just under 7,000. No setting changed anywhere so must have been a faulty Samsung 990 pro

oh phew. Magician is reporting full throttle.

You did update to latest firmware right? 980s and 990s on 3xxxxx firmware have a problem. Patching to 5xxxxxx firmware solves it

I guess the last question then is was it a legit item? Presume magician showed the right product? I.e. it wasn't some label switched warehouse return etc?

It's always possible the controller was duff or similar so it could be as you say - a dud. Rotten luck if so.

Everything checked out fine, annoying as I’d always used 970 and 980’s before but this but has put me off them now, happy with the WD

good shout to check this. Though the mobo and bios manuals are rather poor in explaining which settings to check. OP i would see if there is an online guide or 3rd party help manual.

You should be able to use software to check this; like if it's a Samsung drive install the install the magician software and it can tell of the drive is operating at Gen 4 and if it's x4. There should be other software that can do the same, such as speccy

he knew it was reporting pcie3x4, we were talking about finding a list of which BIOS settings to check to see if something was artificially gimping the slot

Have you sent the Samsung back yet? I was wondering if reseating the drive would change anything, as the contacts on the M.2 might just have a bit of dirt on them, or the pins on the drive might be a little dirty. Unlikely I know, but it's worth a shot.
