A beginners first build...

I was thinking the wooden desk would be best as wood is an insulator? I also have a radiator right next to it.

Do you have to touch a specific part of the radiator or just anywhere?

Just anywhere at all on the radiator mate, desk is a great place, as you can work in a bit more comfort as opposed to down on your knees on the floor, saves buying knee pads as well.:)

They have their use but i will confess to never having used one in almost over 10 years of pc repair and building.

Your dining/kitchen table is fine. Preferably a large table so you can keep the components handy. Before opening any box and handling the components ground yourself. Quite simple really reach for the radiator on the wall or touch the case.

You will notice that as you build the system you are constantly in contact with the chassis (case) and grounding yourself. By having the components handy you arent dragging your feet over the carpet building a static charge.

The actual wristband is crocodile clipped to the case to ground you. Seeing as you are in constant contact with the case it really isn't worth it. If you are worried then buy one by all means

Ok thanks a lot for your help.

As I put everything together on Monday, I'll post some pics and let you know how everything goes.

Once again, thanks:D

As a first build you WILL be a lil nervous. My advice is take your time and do a lil research, youtube videos will help build a lil confidence.

I will add a lil advice now as i may not be available for comment next week, this is my b'day weekend.....i may not survive lol

(once grounded) place the mobo inside the case. You will see in the case there a lil brass mounting standoffs. You need to marry these up to the holes on the mobo. Once done add parts to the mobo out of the case, it is far easier and safer to do so. Then return the mobo to the case, I like to use washers between the mobo and the lil screws but its optional.

Keep the build simple and take your time. If it doesnt work first time, don't panic. Double check connections and you will find plenty of assistance on this forum.

Look forward to seeing how it goes (providing i live long enough to see it thru ;p)

Thanks for that.

I have done plenty of research before even buying the components, about 5 months worth, so i have a very good idea of how everything will fit together.

Also, if i get into any trouble, i can always ask the kind people on here for assistance:D

Only 1 day now, it feels like christmas :D

I have taken everything off of my desk now and just have the PC case and PSU on there, ready for tomorrow.

When i have finished building though, could you recommend some benchmark programs that i can run to ensure everything is working as it should be? I have seen them before but can't remember any of the names?

Here are the first of my photographic updates:D

Here is what i have so far,

Case, PSU, Case Window...

Hurrah, build finally under way. :)

(I'm quite impressed by the number of views this topic has now...)

I know, it has to be the longest spec me/first build thread ever:D

I'm glad it is now under way too, it looked like it may not be happening this year after having to buy something else, but a very nice dad of mine has lent me the money!

Hopefully i can get this started tomorrow morning rather than afternoon as when i ordered the CPU, the DPD guy was here at about 10:00am

A quick update...

Just checked the tracking for everything and the estimated delivery time is 16:00-17:00 :(

Looks like this is going to go on long into the night

Now I have to wait all day to get started :(

Noob Tip #829 : Remember that not all motherboards screw directly into the case. Screw them into the provided nuts

I wanged 3 PCs together before I learnt that. Whoopsie.

Do you mean they screw into the stand offs?

Only a couple more hours of waiting now, then i can finally get started!

How long do you think it will take to put all of the components together. It is supposed to be delivered by 5:00 but i have to go out at 6:15. Do you think this is long enough to put everything together. I can then install all of the software when i return at 8:30?

Here are some pictures I've put all the cables I don't need behind the case and all the ones I do need on the other side like the mobo power, gpu power and front panel lights and buttons.

When I get all the parts installed its just the case of trying to get all the cables out of site so there is good airflow. Think I've done ok for the antec 300 as it isn't a great case for cable mangment and I have a fan controller :)
