A bright future for MMOs...Is this the death of WoW?

Every single MMO that comes out is going to "Kill" WoW. I am getting rather bored of people saying this, WoW is here to stay untill Blizzard decide to stop releasing content or shut down the servers. Face it WoW is the most mainstream MMO and the most popular no other MMO is going to "Kill" it.

Stop trolling please...WoW fanboy.

The only thing that will kill WoW is WoW. It's just too big to be knocked off it's perch yet. It's established itself as a pop icon. It is the MacDonalds of MMO's, and unfortunately that won't change for a number of years yet.

I say unfortunately not because I don't like WoW. But because it's so popular and has set a standard so high, it's actually detrimental to up and coming MMO's. People have expectations of what a MMO should be now, really high expectations. And this leads to cookie cutter MMO design.

* The beta should be bug free (hello irony)
* The classes should all have 'builds'
* Deaths should be meaningless
* More quests than you can poke a stick at (doesn't matter if they're tedious, as long as you have looooads of them)
* World pvp is shunned in favour of instanced goofy "capture the flag" or "control point" objectives that just make zero sense. It looks like a junior school football match where the whole pitch is running after a ball. What lore explains that, lol

You get the idea.

It's not that WoW isn't a good game -- it is, and it's superbly put together and the numbers they're touting is phenomenal. (Can you believe South Park devoted an episode to it??). It's just it's set a particular standard that other development teams feel forced into adhering to. If they /dont/ then they are really gambling with the games future.

So the end result for US is less choice. Less innovative game design, less funding for the more unique/niche/off the wall MMO's. Creating an MMO has always been a risky venture, post-WoW it's even more so. That really sucks. I know Bioware are working on an MMO atm, and they're making no secret of the fact they're going for WoW's crown. That bothers me.

What are you then? A Warhammer fanboy? You are not allowed to post in my thread unless you agree to **** of all MMOs but Darkfall. My thread, my rules.

I have never heard of "Darkfall" so if their game is like their advertising then it's going to be pretty bad, sorry.

Fact is anyone producing MMO's atm is doing so because they've seen the huge success Blizzard have made and are trying to replicate it. These new games wont even touch WoW's player base. But! I will be trying them. :p

OliP is totally correct.

I have played WoW since it was released in EU. While I do believe that its best days are long behind it and that the new content is a bit poor compared (my opinion only) it is still one of the best MMOs out there, and I have played almost every one at some point.

No single MMO will even remotely scratch WoWs subscriber base. WAR is average and slightly hollow. Games Workshop and Warhammer have a massive following worldwide and the game has been hyped for years, it hasnt held an impressively large player base and has not dented WoWs base at all.

Darkfall looks interesting, I like the idea of a sandbox MMO, but I fear for its rather inexperienced developers and im also skeptical after the 'failures' of AoC and WAR.

As previously stated, WoW is here to stay, and I imagine it will be at the top of the MMO gaming league for quite some time.

If it manages anything close to 100,000 subscribers when it starts billing, then they are doing well.

For the masses, WoW is the MMO gamers comfort blanket. Its refined and familiar, and that is why the majority always go back for more :)

It's funny, last months PCGamer had a chart of all MMO's current subscriptions, most of them were around 200k-400k, then WoW sitting at the top as the mother of all mothers. It'll be in that spot for a few years to come I'm sure.

True, I dont think there are 100k old style MMO players left around, I think a likely figure would be something like 50-70k. So at 10k players logged in simultaneously per server, I think just a few servers should suffice. If it does turn out to be anything like UO, then as long as the server is populated I would be happy. Its still an "If" though in regards to recapturing some UO magic.

Im afraid that WoW holds control over the market and its very unlikely that its going to lose its place any time soon.

A shame though, because there are lots of very interesting and very good alternatives. Unfortunately, people dont give them a chance and compare everything to Warcraft polish. Ignoring the fact that WoW wasnt nearly as clean and polished on release as it is now.

What are you, 12? Just sounds really childish, it may be your thread but whats the point in starting a discussion if your not going to listen to other peoples opinions. WoW isn't something you just kill off overnight, its too big a franchise now to do that, the only mmo's that had a chance of doing it were SWG and maybe LotR. Unfortunately SWG got turned into a jedi free-for-all for kids and although LotR is very good, it came along too late to steal any of WoW's thunder. Most of the big franchises such have Warhammer have tried and failed, maybe the new Old Republic game might we'll just have to see. Either way i think WoW is going to be here for a very long time, like it or lump it, nothing says you have to play it.

I am joking. It is all a joke...I am taking the wee.

I think the only thing that will bring the death of WoW is "Wow 2", or whatever the next Blizzard MMORPG is.

Blizzard brought a lot of people into the MMO market that weren't really MMO gamers before and I think many developers/publishers are forgetting that, expecting large numbers of players for popular IPs that weren't there.

I think the only IP outisde of Blizzard's control at the moment that *might* beat the WoW numbers is Star Wars, though it would take a lot of development to appeal to the mass market like WoW has without annoying too many fans of the original IP. It looks like SOE/LA tried to go with that in the NGE but we all know how badly that went.

Tip to Blizzard: don't annoy current player base too much.

Didn't they say this about Age of Conan ?
Didn't they say this about Warhammer online ?

I was going to say the same thing. Every "big" new MMO that gets announced gets hyped up to the eyeballs with the same old crap. Look at how swish the graphics are, look at the storyline blah blah blah.

I think WoW is stinking pile of dog poo, but it takes one arrogant so and so to proclaim that the next MMO is going to crush it.

Warhammer is pretty cool, but it has lots of issues and - so a friend keeps telling me - not much to do after a point. AoC is not even on the radar anymore - does anyone even play it still?

Fact is WoW isn't going anywhere. Even if these next two MMOs are the perfect realisation of an MMO, they wont crush WoW.

So, we have two MASSIVE games on the way. Darkfall and The Chronicles of Spellborn are just looking fantastic and i actually think this could be the death of WoW. How does WoW stand a chance against such titles? They offer a LOT more than WoW...More fun, better graphics, and they just look like they have more depth to them.

Bye bye WoW, these two biggies will crush you.

What do you guys think? Will WoW manage to keep any subscribers?

No

Nein.

Non.

Just like Age of Conan / Warhammer Online / Pony Adventures In Pink Pony Land were "WoW killers"?

Will never happen.
