A bright future for MMOs...Is this the death of WoW?

So, we have two MASSIVE games on the way. Darkfall and The Chronicles of Spellborn are just looking fantastic and i actually think this could be the death of WoW.

Never heard of them.

How does WoW stand a chance against such titles? They offer a LOT more than WoW...More fun, better graphics, and they just look like they have more depth to them.

Bye bye WoW, these two biggies will crush you.

What do you guys think? Will WoW manage to keep any subscribers?

Didn't we hear this about AoC not very long ago?

And Warhammer too, IIRC.

The game sucks, that is why nobody plays it.

Obvious troll is obvious. :p

I haven't been fussed about WoW for years, but it's pretty sad to see people slam it and say it sucks. It's undisputedly a very high quality game.

If it manages anything close to 100,000 subscribers when it starts billing, then they are doing well.

For the masses, WoW is the MMO gamers comfort blanket. Its refined and familiar, and that is why the majority always go back for more :)

It's more than that, though. WoW has a pedigree stretching back to the late 90s when the original game was released.

WoW is the evolution of a game which revolutionised RTS gaming and generated a cult following which grew with the release of every sequel.

You can't simply dethrone a 10 year old fanbase with a single game.

I think WAR is going to be one of those games that's going to be around for quite a few years, and will slowly gain more and more subscribers over that time. Eventually it may start to contend with WoW or whatever big MMO is around then.

Personally I'm happy that we have more choice in MMOs.

wasn't chris the Wow fanboy in the War threads, or was he War loving only, i can't remember.

Either way, why are people so plainly irritating and believe there can only be one MMO that can do well. Frankly Lotro, Wow, City of Heroes are all raking in cash taking in far more than they spend on content at the moment and the fact is that while some play all 3 of them, some play only 2, some play just the one MMo they like in the style they prefer.

More depth doesn't mean more subscribers, what it means is a new game for gamers who want more depth, there could be 10 of them, there could be a billion, everyone of that billion could be people who have never and will never play WOW.

Personally, a game with little to do but create a complete fake life, not really have questing/leveling or a real aim do nothing for me. But so what, everyones different. IN 10 years there will be 50 massive MMO's all raking in 10's of mils a year, another 250 that are doing ok and another 10 a year that last a year and make a loss. Much like every other genre of game.

WoW will not suffer DF will not be for the carebears & CoSB I am not sure about, but I hope WoW does stay safe we don't want the carebears invading DF & carebearing it up.

Don't you dare **** of Warhammer. It is a better game than WoW will ever be. WoW is just a grindfest....Darkfall has no grinding at ALL so it pwns WoW.

Thing is, people always moan about grinding in MMOs and how boring and repetitive it is, but lets face it, grinding is a big draw to MMOs. WOW, Lineage, etc, all feature large amounts of grinding and all have the most hardcore dedicated players.

Grinding gives a player a tangiable progress curve - you kill 100 creatures, you go up a level, you get nice loot. You improve your character, which at the end of the day, is what MMO gaming is all about...having the best equipment, the best reputation and PVP rank etc. It gives the game a competitive edge and allows players to show that their toon is more developed as they have put more hours in.

Having no levelling is all well and good in theory, how how long would it keep people's interest if every single player was homogenous...theres no real sense of progress. In fact I would go so far as to say having no levelling/grinding is a good reason why an MMO will fail ultimately.

Darkfall does have "levelling" of course, in the same sense that UO had "levelling". Its just that its raising your skills through use, instead of the more common character levels. In Darkfall, just as you used to do in UO, you might "level" your swords skill up to 80 and your magic skill to 90 and your strength to 100 so that you can end up as a platemail wearing, sword wielding caster.

Its still levels of a kind, its just that you dont say Ah, I am level 21, aha..now I am level 22. I cannot use this item until I am level 23 and I know that I cannot kill that monster there because I can see it is level 27.

So theres still levels (and with that of course grinding) in both Darkfall and UO, its just that they arent quite as rigid or clearly defined as in "level" based games

who cares if those games are WoW killers?

The only way itll end WoW is if it appeals to the kiddies that play WoW in the first place and I hope it doesnt!!!

Leave WoW to the kids and let Darkfall or/and Spellborn appeal to the Men.

I thought ohh Age of conan looks great, crazy new targeting, slick graphics... It was a flop. Then I thought woo War looks great... it was a flop. Then came <insert MMO here> it looked great before it came out... then it was a flop, and so it continues.

I wouldnt say AoC was a flop, its still a busy game that has an excellent combat system.
