A day of fun filled test driving on the way..

Absolute madness to spend that on an Astra! If it must be new then widen your search..As already mentioned look at the A3.

Or personally if it has to be new & a diesel I would look at a VW Golf GT TDi, you can get the DSG version for £19425 rrp.

19k on an astra!? :D :checks date on calendar

Are you sure you should be financing a car if you don't even have £500 for a deposit?

And  @ the insurance - £200 a month is £2400 a year, which is way more than I'll be paying on my new ST TDCI (group 13), but I'm (slightly) younger than you!

Slight miscalculation, it will be less than that, and funding for the deposit isnt going to be a prolbme, the only thing I am worried about is the fact they might not give me the finance without a Guarentore.. which would delay it as my parents are mid way through moving.. money isnt going to be an issue, I think the insurance will be considerably less, as its only a group 5 car (the new shape 1.4) and im driving a group 6 car at the moment anyway!

Car finance is one of the easiest forms of finance to get. They'll give it to pretty much anybody if you can prove you can make the payments as there is a tangible asset with comparatively low depreciation (compared to a computer/tv/hifi/white good) which they can repossess if you can't pay. I don't think you'll have a problem if you're in full time work :).

Company Car money, dad wants something to play with, I dont blame him for spending someone elses money for somthing that will be mint.. okay its a Vauxhall but he is getting every extra possible, not just buying a badge :)

Please clarify exactly what model of Astra it is as there's some confusion atm.

As for your inference that buying a BMW or Audi is simply buying a badge - LMAO! Either makes the Astra look like a badly designed and put together toy IMO.

Touche ;)

Right, he is having the Astra SXi CDTI, but is looking to get the VXR body kit (Which is possible) and I wasnt infering that you are JUST buying the bade, I am saying that for the money you are paying for the 118d, you can get a better specced car..

From what I can see, the only diesel the SXI CDTi comes with is the 1.7 unit with 100PS. This is where the confusion lies as you said it was much faster than the 1 series yet even the 118d would leave it for dead, let alone the 120d

As for "every extra possible", I just tried selecting this model on the website and ticking every option I could see and it came to £23k so if he's getting all of that for £19k then that's a good discount but still a shedload to spend on an Astra. Yes he's getting more options than he would on a 1 series or A3 but then the base car is inferior. Personally I'd rather get the BMW or Audi and forego a few options.

Not me, this is my dad, he said between the 1 Series and the Astra, he said that in the upper gears that the Astra was better, and said the 1 series was lazy, but he didnt get the chance to drive 118d M, which he would get if he decided to go for it, he is giving all the prices and things in tomorrow, so thats when he'll decide.. perhaps it was the SXi XP..

There's no such thing. Perhaps it was the SRi XP, which has a 150PS diesel engine option? This is the only way I can see it outperforming a 118d, but if it were this model then I doubt he'd be getting it with all possible options for £19k.

Thats the beast.. I think he maxed out on his budget @ 21k when we specced it up at the dealers...

Why has he not tested the Audi A3? It's so much better than the Astra its not even worth explaining why..

And an SRi with 'all possible options' comes to quite a bit over £21k.

Online maybe, but this is what the dealer said that we had almost all of the options.. but anway, by the end of the day we will know what he chooses..

I ended up taking a very nice Pepper pack 56 Plate 1.6 in Chilli Red.. my first impresseions:

I did all the financing whilst I was there, and I have settled on the car, although with the financing i've been offered, i am gonna get the upgraded stereo kit..

Specs:

  • Mini One - 1.4 16v New Shape released in April with new engine
And with all the delivery charges, first Reg Fee an VAT comes to £13,967.15

So you've not actually driven a car of the same model as your going to buy? Seems strange to me the 1.4 might not stack up to the 1.6 if I was investing that much money i'd want to be 100% sure.

Your about to sign for 3 years of £300 a month repayments on a car you havnt even driven! You will be bored of the speed of it after about 6 months and want something quicker, cant imagine its much fun accelerating onto the motorway and just fustrating if you want to overtake....

I would have a think, why are you going for the 1.4, costs? Phone up the insurance and see how much difference there is between engine sizes. :)

agreed, you will get bored of the 1.4 very quickly but you're going to be stuck with it for 3 years

To be honest the fact he has to wait until April to afford the deposit, has to go for a 1.4 because its Group 5 etc etc says to me that he is spending money he doesn't have on a brand new car he cannot afford :(

I think the 1.4 has replaced the 1.6, it is slightly more powerful looking at the tech spec (a whole 5 hp  )

They are quite fun but not that fast and have no boot :( You'll probs want to upgrade fairly quickley.

The 1.6 cooper looks better than it used to be (on paper anyway) :)

A 1 series diesel would seem very sensible to me. With it's low CO2 rating, save enough on tax and buy a s/h Westfield for fun.
