A fair comparison. PS3 vs 360 price.

Over and over again i'm hearing that the PS3 is overpriced
The PS3 is equivalent to the following

Official XBox 360 Play & Charge Kit
@ £12.99 Delivered 1

Official XBox 360 Wireless Adaptor
@ £54.99 Delivered 1

XBox 360 Premium Console
@ £279.99 Delivered 1

XBox Live 12 Month Gold Membership Card
@ £34.99 Delivered 1

Total:
£382.96

I haven't included the HD-DVD drive either, which would increase the price another £150 to ~ £530

Roughly the same price as a Sony Playstation 3 PS3 Console With 60GB HDD + FREE HDMI cable + Click (Blu-Ray) @ £399.

Cost of ownership is roughly the same.

I havent read this thread and suspect there will be many other posts like this but heres my take:

I only paid £249.99 (-£30) for my 360 premium as many will be able to, i dont need or have the wireless adaptor (-£54.99) and only paid £9.99 for my xbox live sub, (-£25) = £272.97, compared to £399.

Which for me, is a more realistic comparison.

Who knows what the numbers are :) Clearly there is some sort of inherent flaw with 360s, both in terms of their overall reliability and in terms of them sometimes scratching discs through no fault whatsoever of the console owners.

Isnt it a lot to do with people moving the xbox whilst its powered up?
If you do that you deserve to have your disks scratched, bet the ps3 would do the same

I know loads of peeps with 360's - not one has had their game scratched. Theres certainly not enough data to suggest this is a widespread problem (unless your a 360 basher of course).

Console failure rate is another matter however....

It's obviously happened enough for MS to stand up and pay attention.

My last 360 scratched the discs and it was never at any time moved while on or off.

Overall the failure rate of the 360 is higher than it should be so I would guess the number of consoles scratching discs is higher than usual as well, but it's nowhere near the problem dirtydog seems to think it is.

Yip but MS acknowledge that moving the 360 while the game is in the drive WILL scratch it - not that the games will be scratched willy nilly.

Now if only they would pay attention to the failure rate !

I find it hard to believe too many people would be stupid enough to move the 360 while it's being used.

Only morons would move a console while a disk is spinning in the drive, If thats what causes the scratching, then no way in hell would MS start offering a replacement scheme. As it's in no way the fault of microsoft.

They replace the disks because they are being scratched while in the drives, and not being moved. Another general fault, that again seems random. And it's happening enough for Microsoft to take note and try and do something about it.

Not on purpose, no, but one could budge it by mistake, especially if they have a controller plugged in.

Not that I have, or anything, ahem.. :o

Don't forget to factor in the cost to 360 owners of replacing scratched discs as well.
LOL. I have yet to replace one, not even a rental disc has given me a hard time yet.

That's true of any console, though maybe actually less so now with how heavy they are.

I love how the experience of 1 person seems to negate the experience 100s these days :D
I think you quoted the wrong person... surely this was meant as a reply to the person who said the Wii wasn't a success and was going downhill because of alleged hardware problems ;)

In terms of running costs, don't forget to add the cost of petrol you need to spend having to take your xbox 360 back for a replacement every time it breaks !
