A Jailbreak Guru

4.0.2 has been released which blocks the PDF exploit which they use to jailbreak your phone on jailbreakme.com.

I've also found D7's videos to be the most accurate, true, clear and easy to follow!

Also loving the new jailbreak method, no need to sit around for hours and hours trying to figure out firmware version, modem version, blah version, bleh version, mc this and that. :D

My 3GS was a brick for a few weeks cos I accidently upgraded it to 4.0.1 and couldn't turn back.

Considering JB my iPhone 4, but I have a couple of quick questions:

1. How do you remove the JB once installed? It is a case of uninstalling Cydia?

2. What happens if I JB then upgrade the phone to a non-JB compatible firmware? Will the phone continue to function?

You just choose to upgrade/restore your phone via iTunes.

You will lose your jailbreak and all jailbroken apps, tweaks etc but your phone will function fully. If your unlock relies on a jailbreak (ie ultrasn0w) then you will also lose your unlock.

Well, I just restored to an unjailbroken state. Got totally fed up with the phone doing odd things and crashing. A shame too as I'd bought MiWi and only had a couple of things installed (OpenSSH, SBSHsettings).
I shall keep the jailbreak on my iPad as I don't care if that's not 100% reliable as it's a secondary device.

Thanks for the info. If you restore via iTunes, do you lose all your numbers, pics, vids, etc?

I believe they should remain as they are.

  1. Do a full backup of your phone on iTunes.
  2. Upgrade to iOS 4.0 on iTunes.
  3. At the end of the upgrade it'll ask if you want to set your iPhone up as a new device (blank state) or restore from back. Choose to restore from backup and select the latest backup.
Mine is a 3GS which I jailbroke a year ago, had loads of customisations, games, apps etc. I recently upgraded it to 4.0.1 and all of my contacts, videos, etc were still there.

I'm finding somewhat conflicting reports on whether MC iPods can be jailbroken.

I have a MC086BT model 8GB 2nd/3rd Gen on iOS4.0. Can it be done or not, please?

I bought an iPad the other week and updated both my iPod touches To 4.0.2 and iPad to 3.2.2 only a few days later I found out it can't be jailbroken at the moment, is this still the case?
