A Jailbreak Guru

JB'ing is great. I've done it for years on so many iPhones, it's unreal. Must have JB'd well over 30 for people I know.

However with JB, there is a massive risk to go 'overboard' with apps, some of which will be flaky so you all need to be careful. You've unlocked your device now and you can mess up the OS with a rogue app should one appear. I've seen only two in my time that were somewhat malicious.

Wish you lot could have seen my recently sold 3G, it was a work of art! No shoddy winterboard, just a nice looking springboard :)

oh yes i know all about that !!!
os4 theme about 3 months ago completely borked my 3g, after 2days of figuring out a way round and fix, the only method was to update firmware, loose my JB and unlock and wait 2 months for next JB
lucky for me my wife allowed me to buy another iphone until the JB was released to sort the borked phone.
worked in her favor as she now has the other :D

So should we not jailbreak and if we have already is it easy to unjailbreak back to your previous settings with everything intact?

What I did last night...

- Plugged In iPhone - Made a Backup of my iPhone
- Visted Jailbreakme.com on iPhone - Jailbroke my phone (At this point my phone was unchanged. I.e. My SMS, contacts, Music, Videos etc are still there - Just had Cydia installed)
- Done all sorts of crazy **** that I couldn't normally do on my phone
- Plugged In iPhone - Restored phone from backup (Jailbrake gone, Cydia disappeared - everything back to normal)

I then, jailbroke again and restored it again :p

Very, very easy - and practically risk free, as long as I kept a copy of my backup  :D

Yes what Marky said. To get everything back to normal just restore.. either from iTunes or probably from the device itself if you can still do that (settings somewhere towards bottom)

What actually does the backup do Marky? Just remember what has to be synced again or?

I think of jailbreaking as installing windows and not downloading anything else.... installing iOS and not installing anything else. You need stuff from elsewhere ;)

JB'd my 3G yesterday. So far my favourite JB apps are SBSettings (lets you quickly enable/disable Wi-Fi, 3G, location services, etc), and Scrobbl (uploads the songs you play immediately to last.fm).

You can really mess your device up with dodgy JB apps, though. The last time I jailbroke, I installed a theme and my phone just wouldn't boot any more. I had to do a DFU restore to bring it back to life.

I would only install an app which is already tried and tested rather then something I have never heard of and experimenting with it, far less likely to run into problems.

Also, after JB my iphone4 and installing loads of new apps, I can still sync it to itunes and all the new apps get transferred across just fine. :) I didn't sync before I JB my device as some people have suggested to do...

I have not had any negatives myself. Only thing was with one jailbreak for my ipod touch (3g) the jailbreak was tethered meaning every time the device shutdown for whatever reason i would have to plug it into my computer again to jailbreak.
Otherwise umm..? It voids warranty but you can just restore anyway.

Slightly confused about the last bit of what you are saying about any app. Cydia store has applications which get denied by apple on the app store for different reasons. So without jailbreaking you couldn't get these.

Indeed. I'm sure apple stores and the purple shop will be blocking the website on their router settings or whatever otherwise people will be going into the store and jailbreaking the devices.
so i can jailbreak my ipod touch??? sorry i'm quite new to apple stuff and had heard of jailbreaking an iphone but not the touch, i have a gen2 ipod touch will it work for me and if i did it will it allow me to put any music on it or do i still have to use itunes?

I done mine yesterday and started customising things, I think today I'll start changing more of the sounds and some of the graphics.

It will work yes. Well you don't have to use iTunes now.. You can use like sharepod.
You can jailbreak and continue to sync stuff using iTunes (music, apps etc) or you can jailbreak and use sharepod.

As far as I know... everything!

I restored the phone to factory settings accidently last night - So it was as if I just picked it up from the stores.

I just restored it with the back up and everything was back to normal - even down to the wallpaper and text messages :)

Quick Question: My last experience of JBing was ages ago on my 2G. Does this version make any changes to the baseband etc like it did for the 2G?

Just Jailbroke my 4. Installed SBSettings. Now at the top left of the screen where it used to say "Tmobile" next to the signal strength bars it now says nothing or "No Service"?. :(

reboot, when i installed sbs it said no service but i could text and make calls ok. rebooted and all was well.

Scratch the above, just had a Google of that issue and the fix is switch phone off then back on again. Now all back to normal as far as I can tell.

Are there different themes for the SBSettings menus available on Cydia?. Not keen on the default ones.

yep cydia should have a section for sbs skins/themes tho i cant seem to fine the glass transparent one i had on my 3g

I presume that to get back to the 'standard' state its simply a case of restoring the handset from a 'standard' backup?

Can the handset be backed up in a jail-broken state or are the app's downloaded from Cydia not saved in a backup made in iTunes?

there is and app on cydia that should download the cydia progs you had but its hit and miss if it does. anyform of restore would need jailbreaking
