A Jailbreak Guru

I tried it last night (Never done a jailbreak before) but I found that Cydia was very very slow :( It kept coming up with some language gb error and when it was loading its home page it took almost 2 minutes over wifi to load :(

it gets better the more you load it as it has to load new sources each time.

the negs are, there arent any really
the cons are you can have a second app store with apps that have not been on the app store, that have been made by developers with the sole purpose of giving you exactly what you need out of the app.
its like...you buy a ferrari, yeah its fast, but you get home and a man knocks on your door and says i can make your ferrari perform faster and give it more performance for free no catch !...its a no brainer really
like ive mentioned in above post, with JB you have the ability to have apps that are not avaiable on the app store, you can customise the look of the phone, you can do a hell of a lot more things with it that apple dont really want you to do

im so so happy we can discuss this topic now !!!

doh fair point!

Tho it could still need restoring if the battery died i guess...

As the post above make no sense, whats the deal with tethering on the iphone when its JB does it still require an extra £10 per month or is there a way around that?

I'm not wanting to use it for any more than possibly one day a month for a few hours at best so feel ripped off paying the same amount as is paid for internet to the house.

You can get around it. You could get around it without JailBreak if you were an iPhone developer.

Ways around, but its highly likely O2/your network will detect it and pull it up (sommat to do with packets? Can you tell i have no idea?!)

Does this affect my paid for apps or anything at all, as I've got about fifty quids worth of games installed. Does it literally just give me the Cydia program after J/B with everything else untouched?

Yes. (but backup to iTunes before you do it).

I was also wondering this....

From reading around all it does is give you an extra app... which is the app store (could be wrong though... it has been known :p )

Cool, I don't really want to mess with the OS and like the way i've set it out so don't want loads of piratey crap on it, but would like to see what's there. JB'd my first gen iPhone but that was before the app store existed!

This may be a completely stupid question....

Is there something in the Cydia store which will allow java to be played?

Awesome.

I've been waiting ages for a way to JB my 3GS (new baseband).. I'm over the moon now I've got SBSettings installed :p

One-tap access to 3G/wifi toggle is great, and will help my battery massively!

So should we not jailbreak and if we have already is it easy to unjailbreak back to your previous settings with everything intact?

Could I basically do this:

All setup perfectly
Backup via iTunes
JB
???
Profit
Un-JB
Restore the last Backup
All setup perfectly again and Apple dont know the difference

I want to make sure I can 'roolback' to normal as easily as possible without having to add settings etc again. Also what happens when Apple updates firmware and the like when you are JB? Ive always dismissed the idea but want to understand all the pitfalls before I attempt to do it in case an assumption of mine ends up bricking my phone down the line. Just assume for me that nothing is obvious :p

It's not pirate, it's all perfectly legal until you start pirating paid apps from the app store.

Profit? When you restore it in iTunes you will loose anything acquired via cydia but keep all your contact, apps etc.

Anyone who doesn't j/b isn't using their iDevice to its full potential!
Jailbreak my 3GS within 20min of getting it and my launch day iPad was j/b within 30min!
