A month off work and £2k to spend, where would you go?

I wouldn't say more than a week with a £2k budget for Tokyo. You're going to spend about a quarter of that on flights and then spend most of the rest on hotel(s) (exactly how much will depend on how much you are willing to slum it). It's the small costs that will kill you though, food, drinks, misc small travel around.

If you up the budget, like suggested, to stay a bit longer then look at getting a 7 day rail pass for part of it which will allow you to travel around a lot fairly cheaply.

To be honest I'd say look at the actual numbers and see how it works out, it's a great place to visit and I look forward to going back this year myself, but I would more likely look into spending a couple of weeks in the US as [TW]Fox has likely suggested for your budget.

Could you spend the month teaching English as a foreign language? That should give you accommodation at least.

Random thing. Since you're interested in motors, would going to a motorsport event appeal at all? Do you want to stay in the one place, would you like to move around at all? Are you wanting to be away somewhere the whole month or would you be happy enough with going for two weeks with a couple of weeks at home as well?

A Motorsport event could be interesting but the tickets for e.g. formula 1 would take up a big chunk of the budget.

Ideally 3-4 weeks, originally was thinking maybe 2 weeks in one place then 2 in another but that might be out of budget.

If the budget is non negotiable then I think an interrail pass and some hostels is your best beat, could see a lot of Europe that way.

Could stretch to 3k max, 2k was a guess but seems I've massively underestimated how expensive this would be.

Unfortunately I don't know any foreign languages, and 9 months probably isn't long enough to become fluent in one?

Have heard people say how great Europe, Asia and North America are

That narrows it down a bit, lol :)

Personally for a month trip I'd be looking at a multi-stop tour. Maybe US West Coast with a few days stopovers on the east (already done NYC... perhaps Florida and the Caribbean if budget permitted). Depends what sort of thing interests you - we tend to prefer the bright city lights with occasional excursions into the wilderness, rather than the other way around.

I would normally agree but I cant see how you can do that for a month, alone, on 2 grand including flights.

I pretty much do it every year for 2 to 3 weeks and it's similar money and that's with two of us bringing down the per person cost, no alcohol and a non extravagant food spend.

it depends what you like doing, do you just want to travel or do you actually want to do something. Last year i did a week surfing in croyde and a week kitesurfing in Tarifa, was amazing fun :)

I'd also look at south east asia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia & Vietnam are well worth a visit and you could easily do two months on £2k if you don't mind taking the slower forms of transport, which are an adventure in themselfs
