** A NEW BEST SUB £300 CARD? AMD 290X 8GB!! **

I got two of the 8Gb MSI cards. They run too hot in my case so I'm currently running a single card.
All the games I've tried thus far play fine with just the one at 1440p. Just so long as you don't go silly with the AA.

I think the reason is that generally by the time you've run out of VRAM the card has run out of grunt anyway. So you may have to turn settings down to run these newer games at the settings that would use all the VRAM, which might possibly mean that the game no longer uses the extra VRAM.

So just because a card has 8GB VRAM it doesn't mean it'll be able to run BF4 @ 4K with 60fps. 1080p will be less demanding so you're less likely to run out of grunt, but you're also less likely to run out of VRAM.

So it may be worth saving money getting a 4GB.

Thanks for that explanation, figured it would be something along those lines.

Cheers

Can't find ANY reviews of the MSI online? Somebody tell me these beat a 970?

in fps terms they seem on a par...
reason to buy ati 8gb: the 8GB may give them [significantly] more longevity...subject to how far north vram usages goes in the next few years...
reason not to buy: a bit noisier......jurys out on lack of full DX12 support - whether this means anything in practise no ones saying...

970 good bang for buck over 2 years...a safe choice over next 2 years
8GB 290x....possibly the best value in a long while...but who has a crystal ball....

Thanks Ninja. So basically no... Seems i'm better off sticking with 970. Assetto corsa runs nice and i'm enjoying it. Wouldn't want to ruin it, just for the sake of a maybe.
When consumer oculus does finally surface, i'll re-assess then. Sorted... I think:confused: lol
