A64 Mobile 4000

After further testing, I've found my mobile 3400+ generates way too much heat! It's maximum is 2.5GHz with 1.65v but it's going above 60c with the 948U and a decent 92mm fan. Bit too hot for my liking so I'm gonna run it at defaults because even at 2.4GHz it needs 1.6v so I guess I'm unlucky and got a lemon.

Also the MSI K8N Neo Platinum can run for a while at 300 FSB but it's useless really because it eventually falls over by switching itself off under heavy load. :)

I never had much luck overclocking my old 3400+ Claw with the K8N Neo Platinum either.

As for the heat, that's really bad luck. How about a Ninja to cool it or is one of those too big?

The amount of heat being produced even at 1.5v is a huge surprise (I'm new to Athlon 64 CPUs) especially as an Athlon XP at 1.75v wouldn't produce as much heat. I figured it was a problem with the heatsink so I reseated it three times. It wasn't the heatsink as each time the heatsink was becoming really hot under load suggesting very good contact with the CPU.

I don't know how much heat a Ninja could dissipate quickly compared to the 948U but maybe it would be worth while finding out. Although I suspect this CPU is just a heat generating monster and likely nothing will be able to cool it effectively at high volts (45c max under heavy load would be nice).

I did a lot of reading about the max volts to put through a Clawhammer and allegedly AMD have suggested no more than 1.65v especially if you don't want to damage it whereas they suggested no more than 2.25v for an XP CPU.

just a little update as to my Mobile fiasco.

Yesterday I received my Biostar Tforce 6100. So I was up bright and early to get it installed and up and running. After a run-in with a rather large wasp hell bent on attacking me, I finally managed to seat the motherboard and power up with just the 3700 claw, graphics card, memory and hard disk connected. Switched on the power and what should greet me but a lovely fireworks display from the +12v socket, a few capacitors and some other gubbins that I have no idea about.

One dead motherboard.

So I've now got my Epox back in (amazingly everything still works!!) and am awaiting a reply from the outlet I got the board from as to what they want to do about it.

Great

Sorry to hear about the news matey. Was the fireworks good though? :D

Loved the fireworks I got off my SK8N hehehe. I went to the shop, bought it, brought it home. Did a vdimm mod to it. must have been in the house all of an hour. Smoke and sparks coming from the board :p

Took the vmod off and took it back about 3 hours after I bought it and got a new one :D No questions asked. It was great.

With the new board I knew, that the board would'nt be able to take 3.84v to the mem :D

You are not having much luck there Andy. Did you see the reply i got from Asrock further up? Must remember never to buy anything from them. Their email was most impolite and harsh. Are they not something to do with Asus? That explains a lot then. I hate Asus by the way.

Bennah, why the hell would you need to get 3.84v  to the memory? I thought my Epox was offering a lot at 3.3v if i remember right.

Damn - thats a real shame. i was hoping to hear how you got on with the biostar. I hope you are going to give it another go - I've built several systems with that board and had no problems

Speaking of impolite and harsh - I've been in contact with the company I ordered the Biostar from regarding this issue and they are basically apportioning blame for the whole episode completely onto me. They claim that a motherboard would never go pop like it did as they are rigourously tested before being shipped from manufacture (which is fair enough, it has all the relevant QC information on it) and because a motherboard is classed as a 'fire hazard', it must be me that's sabotaged it in some way. I think they're trying to say I don't know what I'm doing - I explained I've been building systems for years, right from the K6 days and I've built numerous K8 rigs for myself and others. Their only reply to that is, and I quote verbatim "I think Biostar will want to be asking you some serious questions before they would even think of replacing the board under RMA".

To say I'm annoyed with them, not to mention frustrated at the whole thing, is rather an understatement.

I will be giving it another go, for sure.

That damn Newark is STILL sitting on my desk in front of me grinning.

I will get it working.

I feel your pain! I recently went through a long and drawn out case (8 months) between myself and "electrical experts" acting on behalf of my home insurance company. Lightning struck very near the house and killed my recently built media pc. It was only a £350 claim but they came up with all sorts of rubbish about incompatability, the PSU not being powerful enough etc because I was using an XP-m chip, laptop hd etc for cool running. Their ignorance and arrogance was incredible. Ultimately despite several letters where i produced documented proof to back up my claim, the 'specialists' refused to change their stance. Fortunately it went to the top floor of the insuance company, someone read my carefully laid out arguments - then the tosh that the specialists had written and decided to pay out anyway.

What was most shocking was the state i got the pc back in.
The hard drive had a huge dent in the cover, the chip was absolutely butchered - there wasn't a single corner left on the core. Some of the molex wires had come loose so they semi shoved them back in the wrong way around   Serious fire risk there if i hadn't checked it all out.

In your case keep fighting them! If they haven't even seen the board there is no way they can even claim to know what has gone wrong. I'd suggest going direct to Biostar and getting trading standards involved. Crooks the lot of them!

Marc

Hi Andy, As already mentioned get the local trading standards involved (local to that retailer) as they are clearly not fulfilling their duty. These companies are quick enough to take your money but when it goes wrong look out. Get a refund and never use them again. It may have to be the case where you have to get an independant expert to look at the board to prove your case.

That damn Newark is STILL sitting on my desk in front of me grinning.

:D :D It's taunting you to get it working.

Sorry to bump this thread but im in a similar situation. Just ordered a 1900XT and need a mobo to go with it. Currently using a 3700+ which has been rock stable @2.6ghz for the past year really in a MSi K8N-Neo plat so don't really wanna waste money on a S939 setup. If that biostar board you mentioned does work with the turions. Might have to pick up a 4000 when i go to the states in june ;)

I'm a bit late to the party but...

I bought an Asrock K8SLI-ESATA2 after winning a Sempron Mobile 2600+
before i gotta change to fit it i'd won a Turion 64 ML-30 (1.6GHz/1MB)

straight outta the box the Turion fired up first go not problems at all with the release BIOS (rev 1.10)

Picked up a 3400+ Clawahammer mobile/DTR type thing (AMA3400BEX5AP - CAAOC 0407 TPMW) dropped that it also worked first time.

oh yea before i got the Swiftech Water on it i had a ThermalTake Blue ORB II, fits perfectly with the Turion, no worries about crushing the core etc, quite & kept thing nice and cool :)

One of the only anoying problems i have is that i can't run any of my RAM at CAS 2!!! just wont do it at all, thats with Patriot, Ballistix, Kingmax & Corsair!!!

Whats the Vcore voltage adjustment like on that board. Looks like we have a board that takes mobiles. Bit of a bargain too as you can get it for 38 quid.

You read this Andy? :D :D

with the ML-30 the Vcore would only to 1.4~1.45 in BIOS but you can take it a bit higher in Windows via CrystalCPUID upto 1.5~1.55v i think

i havnt actually plugged the thing in for 2~3 weeks as i've been away flat sitting  last thing i did was plug the 3400+ in and play DoD:Source for acouple of days :) will have to get back tonight and start poking around with it again

the Vdimm (which is VCCM in the BIOS!!!) is either High,Middle,Low or Auto  i believe the High setting approx 2.8v

theres also a Chipset Core Voltage whch again is either High,Middle,Low or Auto  why the h3ll they couldnt just put a proper voltage there is beyond me!!!
