Hi, I think that flashing remotely is taking one hell of a risk, better to do it again correctly when you get in so as too make sure it's been done correctly...

As soon as I clicked the button I thought the same - really stupid of me tbh :(

Got home and everything appears to be fine - reconfigured the BIOS and changed multiplier to 14 for a 2.8OC - which is fine - can not for the life of me get it to go at 15 though - will try again tonight, played cs:source matches last night and all seems well - though I may flash it again tonight just to make sure.

Guys, I have some problems with this board. I was pretty busy lately, so didn't tune my PC much after it was functional. I thought my PC wasn't very snappy, especially when loading things. I kept thinking it was the RAM which run pretty slow on dividers (pretty picky), but I finally found the source of the problem when I moved a large file from my boot drive to my data drive.

Look at the burst speed. I am one to think that a burst speed above 100MB is fine, but at 10MB, it is no surprise that anything loading from the HD took a long time.

My main drive is connected to the Sil 3132 controller. The other drive is connected to the ULi controller and works fine. The reason I connected the drives that way is because my main drive is sitting in a drive cooler slotted in a 5.25" bay, and it is the nearest. And I didn't care too much for theoretical burst speed (the ULi support 300MB/sec while the Sil only goes to 150MB/sec) which no physical drive can reach. But 10MB/sec just won't do for any HD made in the last... 10 years? ;)

The other thing is, Asus Update won't work anymore. When I first setup my PC, it was fine, now it gives me some obscure error about some DLL missing. So I uninstalled the app, then tried reinstalling it. It gives me one error box with a gibberish error message, followed by another one saying that it could not find an Asus motherboard

Installation via floppy disk is not an option: there is no functional floppy drive on this PC.

I can't help with your HDD problem, but I was in the same boat as you with Asus update. Don't worry about it; I couldn't get it to work either. Had the same errors as you too. I have a feeling it may have something to do with a Creative soundcard being present in the system. Anyway, there is information about that around here somewhere if you want to search for it.

Assuming you have a USB memory stick however, it's no problem to use that instead of a floppy or Asus Update. All you do is download the new bios, extract the file from the .zip onto your USB stick and rename the extracted file to A8R32MVP.rom (NOT A8R32-MVP.rom like it tells you on page 4-5 of the printed manual  ). Restart your machine with the memory stick plugged in and press <ALT>+<F2> during POST. You'll get a message telling you the BIOS is looking for an update on floppy, then CD, then USB. It will flash and you're good to go.

EDIT: Just a thought about your hard drive problems. Did you install the Silicon Image drivers from the cd that came with the motherboard?

Yea, I sorted the Asus update problem. I am on 0404 now. It was a creative driver issue, there is a workaround involving renaming the Wow6432Node entry in the registry. I am not sure what it does really, but I changed it back after updating, so that part is sorted.

About the HD issue, I have installed the drivers, although I am not sure if it was installed properly. In the control panel, there is a Silicon Image ATA Controller entry. When I double click on it it shows the details of my drive. Int he Hist Link Speed and Device Link Speed section, they are both marked as Generation 1 (1.5GB/s). The Current Transfer Mode is marked as UDMA 6. When I look at the device manager entry, it shows the Driver Version to be 1.0.0.9.

There is also a "Flash Bios" option, but everything is grayed out there.

I just got this Mobo and am now wondering what the hell i've let my self in for.

Am I going to have real big problems with this board?

What should I expect when I boot for the first time after installing it?

Are most of the problems fixed with a bios flash?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It's fine. You're always going to get faulty boards. So far I have not suffered the amount of problems other people have had with this board. Just one, and I can live with it.

Weird. I didn't even know that was in the control panel. I just switched to classic view and found I have a Silicon Image SATA Controllers entry, but mine is totally empty, including the Flash BIOS tab

Okay, here is an update. I switched plugged my Raptor to the ULi controller, and everything is running at full speed.

So that mean there is definitely something wrong with the Sil Controller, but I am not sure if it is just me, or every A8R32. Regardless, I am not happy leaving things as it is. Could someone test this for me?

Cheers.

This is the HDTach graph for mine. 2x WD150Gb raptors plugged into a red and a black Sata port (Sata 2 and Sata 4 according to the manual). Not sure whether my C drive is on the red connector or not, although apparently it's supposed to be.

Is this what you're looking for?

Hi, thanks for the reply. You are actually connecting your Raptor to the ULi controller. That one works fine for me. The one I am having trouble is with the Sil controller near the back of the case (below the CPU socket).

OK Guys just a couple of quick if slightly off topic questions.

I'm buying new Ram next week and I fancied 4Gb. What Ram should I get?

In relation to the ram I cant decide wether to keep my oty 146 that clocks at the moment to 2.81Ghz on air. The 146 might clock higher with better ram cos my 2Gb is 4 x 512 crucial stuff thats about 3 years old.

Water cooling or a Freezone cooler is an option later on.

Or get an FX60 and try for 3Ghz

Or get another opty 170/175 or similar and go for 3Ghz.

Ive posted here cos I have the A8R32-MVP delux motherboard.

I'm also going crossfire at the same time.

I'll be happy with 3Ghz or slightly faster. I play games a lot so its nice to have a fast pc.

Thanks for any help.
