Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2011, Yas Marina Circuit - Race 18/19

Ironic seeing the two GB flags next to the Spanish one, reminded me of the footy score the other night. Ha :D

Ok-ish race.

DRS zone was pretty ridiculous, would have been better if the ruddy Red bull didn't have such a crappy top speed as we would have seen ferrari/redbull/mclaren fights throughout the two drs zone's. Instead his lack of speed meant no clear passing and massa/webber slowing each other up and letting Button get away.

What I can't understand is why anyone overtook in the first drs zone, just close up, get ready for the second zone then take the place in the second zone and have a lap to get away.

Lewis should have split from the pussycat doll ages ago, he might have done as well as today for the whole season. Though we would say it was mostly down to vettel going out, I can't help thinking Lewis feels mentally better and more positive and that can bring more luck for himself. If this is the renewed Lewis, there's great hope for next year.

As for Webber, I feel sorry for him, he's always an also ran. Great driver, but imo, just doesn't have that x factor to be a champion.

A Vettelesqe win for Hamilton - didnt put a foot wrong, shame it turned out to be quite a boring race with or without Vettel wherever your allegiances lie...

Personally Alonso is my DOTD, far more impressive drive from a car that on todays circuit wasnt really much better than the Mercedes...

Nice to hear the British Anthem on Remembrance Sunday outside of the Cenotaph :):(

Completely agree - DRS was at it's artificial worst today. Had the exact conversation regarding using the first DRS zone to get close, but use the second to perform the overtake.

Not really, the pace of the car doesn't matter, and hasn't mattered ALL season, its about the pace of the car you can run without ruining the tyres completely.

Thats the problem this season, if Webber had followed Button around and did a normal pitstop the chances of a real mistake were really stupidly low. Previous seasons tyres weren't such a limitation(thinking several years ago rather than the past 2-3 seasons).

Hamilton's car was MUCH faster than Alonso's, but the tyre could only go a relatively identical speed on both cars without being destroyed so the relative pace either car could run was the tyres pace, not the car's pace.

Alonso did well at the start though to pass cars ahead of him, Button isn't usually a poor starter, though Webber is, he did well to get around Webber and then past Button and that ultimately was all his race was about.

Hamilton only had to fight his own pace and stay within the limits of the tyre.

Though, did anyone else think that as Alonso went past Button they both closed the gap on Hamilton significantly while Hamilton stayed very wide and rather "in" Alonso's line. Was he trying to get in Alonso's way and give Button a bit of help?

Anyway, what we need is tyres that don't limit the car's, if Hamilton was bombing around at full speed, maybe he would catch Vettel(obviously not today) while in the limit he really can't push hard enough. Likewise if the top 6 were all pushing to the car's limit rather than staying well within the tyres limit, they would be both faster, and more liable to making mistakes, making races far less predictable. If Vettel is being pushed harder, he'll be closer to the limit of his car, and would make more mistakes.

Other than Massa who is a mistake machine since his accident, one of the reasons pole has gone on to win the race so much, and often with very little in the way of chances in the top 6 outside of the first lap, its because its a procession of everyone driving a stupid fast car...... in safe mode 10% below the car's limit. Even in qualifying its the same, they are pushing the tyres, not the car, and terrified of ruining the tyres.

LOL DM havent you learnt that no one reads your essays? ;).

I hear though to show the cars true pace the mechanics will now start pushing cars around circuits rather than using the Pirellis tyres as they limit the cars so much. Bernie is trying to push through wetting the track and solidifying it so they can use skates though - think thats going a bit too far Mr Eccelstone ...
