Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2012, Yas Marina - Race 18/20

Quite a few drivers have been running wide, just no punishment for it here which is why they try it and push harder to find the limit I guess.

FP1 times below. FP2 times will be more relevant as it will be the same time (cooler, evening) as the race itself.

It's one of the reasons I don't like these newer tracks, I understand it's done for safety etc. but it allows the drivers to get away with too many mistakes.

Max Chilton within a second of Timo Glock seems like a good indicator. First time in that car. Apparently he has some sponsors and if they decide to drop Pic then he could get the seat.

Bianchi is also close, here are the times of the test drivers except for Caterham as they couldn't run due to issues. Think my sums are right :)

Code:
[b]Driver Team Time[/b]
Pastor Maldonado Williams-Renault 1m45.115s
Valtteri Bottas Williams-Renault 1m45.347s + 0.232

Nico Hulkenberg Force India-Mercedes 1m45.587s
Jules Bianchi Force India-Mercedes 1m45.769s + 0.182

Timo Glock Marussia-Cosworth 1m47.891s
Max Chilton Marussia-Cosworth 1m48.887s + 0.996

Pedro de la Rosa HRT-Cosworth 1m48.354s
Ma Qing Hua HRT-Cosworth 1m50.487s + 2.133

Just noticed the times I posted earlier from Autosport were wrong, they put the same time for the Williams drivers when other sites show different times.

I hope McLaren are stronger that rb this weekend. Will mix things up a bit if Alonso is next to vettel on the grid behind Jensonand lLewis

Thought that was generally the expectation...

Impressed with the others though, all seem to have a decent set of times and Chilton getting that thing just under a second away from Glock isn't too shabby.

The HRT is such a dog of a car, while say a Force India isn't the fastest car on the track, its more than solid and set up well, HRT is a dog, it will take most drivers several races just to work out how to man handle it through corners sideways with no grip. HRT will be a far far harder car to drive than say a Red Bull around most tracks.

I would think the HRT is basically the worst car on the grid to do a test drive in and try and show your pace.

P1 times aren't very indicative of anything, I wouldn't put money on Mclaren being faster than Red Bull this weekend off that gap. Its better than being 1 second off Red Bull's times, but, they could still be that come qualifying so who knows at the moment.

Yes, I am well aware of all of that which is why I wasn't impressed he was nowhere near Pedro when the other new lads all got within at least an acceptable distance of their established team mates.

The Virgin is just a pig of a car and Chilton got 9/10th off Glock...

As much of a dog as the Virgin is, its not a patch on the HRT level or awfulness. Having a quick look, with so so few places saying anything but lapped or 1/2 laps down when doing race times, the best I can see is fastest lap of the race, HRT was over 2.5seconds slower in its fastest lap in Korea.

Also afaik, Chilton has driven an F1 car before in a previous test session, Ma Qing hasn't. Comparing a guy whose completed a whole test session before with a guy, in a significantly worse car, doing his first drive is, well, their times aren't comparable in any sense at all. Chilton also says he's driven the Virgin previously, though I'm not sure where/when. He's also driven the track here before, again, not sure Qing has.

AFAIK its a guy who, has done a test session in another F1 car, driven this car before, driven this track before, vs a guy who has definitely driven an F1 car less, probably hasn't driven the track before and maybe not the car before either.

Oh thought this was Chilton's first outing.

I stand by I would expect a bit more from the Chinese guy, especially if Pedro is taking up the main responsibility for setup work in p1.

Is Edwards the one that keeps getting things wrong and repeating himself?

yeh it's him...I hope his not doing the race.
