Horner puts the Merc speed advantage in Saudi down to the fact the Merc engine wasn't running out of battery power on the straights, implying the Honda was. Interesting that he's no longer bleeting on about the Merc rear wing...

Aren't both the amount of battery power on a lap, and the maximum power, regulated? That being so, wouldn't that imply that this just means Lewis is better at deploying the battery at the right time than Max?

Only FP1, of course, but it doesn't look like either Red Bull or Merc have a big advantage here. Might get a genuine fight for the title.

Also, kudos to Aitken: 0.006s faster than Latifi on his best lap. Not bad for a driver standing in for one session.

Yes there are caps on the power stored and used. But it also depends on track as some tracks they can’t harvest enough each lap to run at 100% every lap. So it could be Merc are having harvest laps between fast laps or are harvesting more effeciently so are able to deploy closer to maximum.

I’ve got a vague recollection too that the rules state energy in to and out the battery. But energy can be harvested from the MGUH and directly power that MGUK which, as it doesn’t go through the battery, it doesn’t count towards to cap of power per lap.

I know it’s something weird like that but don’t quote me on that as I can’t check the full rules and regs right now.

"battery power" will be a gross simplification.

I may be wrong (so please don't shoot me :) ), but it's somewhat as follows:

It will relate to the amount of "energy" the MGU-H can recover from the turbo and feed directly to the MGU-K (which is not governed by an energy flow limit), meaning that less "energy" is then needed to be drawn from the "battery" (ES - Energy Store), meaning whatever you have in the ES can be used to provide power later/for longer.

Therefore if you have a more powerful engine (ICE), or more efficient aero (therefore meaning the engine isn't having to work as hard to maintain same speed), you have more "reserve" available with which to feed the MGU-K directly.

Cool, that's clear. Thanks.

Love Chandock's analysis.
In other words, 5 great examples of Max racing unfairly (uncompromising is not the word here, forcing someone off track is illegal and always has been), Lewis being sensible and avoiding the collision. Lewis does exactly the same to Max at Silverstone and look what happens. If you don't agree that Max is dangerous what Karun is showing us is 5 'potential' Silverstones where Lewis would have been the one punted off at high speed. Ridiculous.

The drivers weren't wrong after Brazil when they were saying they'd have to re-assess how they can overtake and defend. Previously someone doing what Max has done would be penalised right from the outset. The danger of chucking it up the inside with no care about staying on track, and potentially hitting the guy on the outside and punting him off into the wall, is pretty big and can make for a big accident. As Max found out at Silverstone.

All this make's Max's comments about being treated unfairly yesterday even more ridiculous. But we all know that... :o
