Why?

It's very simple - they line up behind or 48.12 can be invoked to let lapped cars pass.

If you're arguing 48.12 wasn't invoked, then they should have lined up as per 48.10.

Yeah I get you and that’s a better rule to try argue wasn’t followed.

as a neutral what a race.
i absolutely do not mind max being WDC, in fact its quite nice to see something new.
but obviously we have the controversy.

Only someone that has little interest in the sport can say this. Never in any sport is it simply nice to have someone new winning, that’s a totally ridiculous viewpoint that sounds like someone’s elderly mother would make. You want the best participant to win, irrespective of how regularly they win… in this instance this was obviously LH and Mercedes. Sport isn’t about letting the other guy have win just to make it more exciting!

I think you're correct but the trouble is that AFAICT not doing that is in itself an infringement. I also can not see anything that lets Masi make up a rule for people to pass other than that one.

What I find even more crazy , is that does that not COMPLETELY screw up the driver behind Max? It means all the cars they were racing ahead are now miles ahead!

It was a made up rule, and a totally ridiculous and unfair one at that.

imho whoever made that last lap decision needs to be fired, tomorrow.
and we need new rules, the biggest being, no pit stops under SC.

Yes, Canada a few years ago was called at 68 laps instead of 70 because they cocked up the flag
That was a chequered flag being waved too early. A very, very different scenario.

Things are calming down then. Someone earlier said he should be shot.

This wouldn't be such a big problem if the rules were known and consistent. Merc made the right call as there was not enough time for the race to finish (within the rules) either with all cars unlapped or Max still to take them all over.

Merc made the decision for Lewis based on the rules. Not the imaginary way things should work in Masi's head.

Some conspiracy theorists have entered the chat.

What kind are you going to claim?

What’s the issue with wanting to know why? Red bull have said it was both a water and oil warning despite these occurring at the same time almost unheard of AND Perez himself claiming there was nothing wrong with the car. At a time when it was hugely beneficial for RB. Warrants answers surely.

Oh come off if, if the race director hasn’t shown the exact wording then the rule doesn’t apply?

Like trying to send someone off on a football pitch but you can’t because their name is misspelt on their jersey.
It’s the rules and it is actually down as a quote, so yes that phrase needs to be used, it’s quite simple. It is to avoid confusion. To be honest there is probably a button for it on the messaging system because of that very reason.

In football you can be punished for having a logo which is 0.5cm too large! Because there is a rule with an exact number on it!

Well, that all shook out in just about the manner expected given the season we've had.

Controversy, outrage, conspiracy theories pushed by F1 fandumb, brainless commentary from the broadcasters...and arguably the wrong guy winning the title on-track.

Marvellous.

and we need new rules, the biggest being, no pit stops under SC.

They did try that before. But it might work better now that refuelling is banned.

Does it matter? If they want to retire a healthy car its entirely within the teams power to do it? Other teams used to do it in the past to get around gearbox and engine usage rules

They didn't know that at all. They could have gone back to racing with two laps to go if they wanted too, but they chose to sweep away some more of the fire extinguisher. The track was otherwise clear and ready to go.

Mercedes have to hold their hands up to some degree, but not because the race was restarted before they thought it should be, but because they didn't pit when they could have done.

You mean people never support underdogs? Are you new to sports or what? For anyone other than Lewis and Merc fans the last 8 years were pretty boring so yes lot of people are happy for someone else to win, myself including. Just a shame that it's in this way.

Exactly! The race director made a personal choice not one following the rules that have been used every other time this has happened, which ultimately decided the winner of the race, and the position of anyone behind Max therefore had no chance to improve their own positions on the last lap so were not afforded the luxury that Max had.

How do you run a sport like this, maybe they should have a wheel of fortune for making choices next season at least that would be down to pure luck every time, they could get ex. drivers to spin it every race and then we'd all be on the edge of our seats.

Yes, but Mercedes still made the right call based on the rules.

Based on the actual rules of the sport, either all the unlapped cars go and then safety car comes in the lap after, OR the cars dont unlap themselves and Max would have had them all between himself and Lewis to pass on the last lap.

If the rules were followed, Lewis would be world champion.

Yep, the more you think about the more egregious it becomes. It was literally a decision to solely benefit one driver.

Even though it broke no rules, how was it "hugely beneficial" to RB in retiring a healthy car?
