Acer 8371/3810 Owners Thread

Recorded system boot time to be 53 seconds into fully loaded OS.

I think with a SSD hdd its about half of this.

The major downsides are definatly lack of a HDMI output, no 2nd HDD bay and that is really all i can put against this laptop. If your looking to buy a SSD with this laptop you need to have some cash to splash imo, as the 320gb drive supplied is large compared to most SSDs and is fast for a notebook hdd (7200RPM).

HDMI and an extra HDD slot would have made this laptop bargain of the decade, we'll just call it bargain of the year as it is... :p

As far as the western digital HDD goes, its the scorpio blue which are rated at 5400rpm although I still found it very decent.

My questions to the other owners:
After a 100% charge, win7 informs me that the battery will only last 7hours.
This is with acer power saving light on. power options are
dim display 3min,
screen 5min,
sleep 2hours.
It was my understanding that other were getting more life?
What i have done so far is charge the battery 100% and use it up 100%, any ideas?
Whilst it was on last night it seemed to only last 5 hours before shutting down. (was downloading over wifi)

I get from between 4hrs - 8hrs usage on here depending on what I am doing, although I have never done an accurate measurement. It normally lasts all day which is good enough for me, although today it didn't as I was running off the battery while running the gpu and cpu oc'ed and I was gaming for ages.

Thank you fella, will give it a go now. Expect me back in half an hour asking how to fix my broken laptop ahah.

Hmm, im assuming the two settings people have been changing are already max on mine?

That's correct, they are the only 2 settings you need to adjust. Close down afterburner and go into C drive, program files, and into the folder where you installed afterburner and open the config file with notepad. In there, there is one line which is something like... 'unlockclockspeeds = 0' and you need to change the 0 to 1.

Then start up afterburner again and you should be able to adjust those 2 bars.

Which Afterburner software did you use Adz??? I have tried the latest but can't see a way to move the sliders beyond the maximum on the 3810TZG of 450/600.

I've downloaded and installed the latest ATI graphics linked to earlier in this thread too.....

Hi mate, read afew posts up.

Any other queries just post in here and I'll try reply asap.

Thanks for that, i didnt see that in the user guide, should have read the readme, DOH.

Just trying to get the OC for the cpu to start with windows but i dont think its working. Tried adding a shortcut to the startup folder but hasnt seemed to work.

I couldn't get the CPU overclock to start with windows either but I decided its best if it doesnt now. When the mrs uses the laptop to do her work it starts up @ 1.4ghz with the onboard gfx. Whenever I use it - I use my settings. :D

Thanks guys, i feel like such a fool when it comes to all this OC stuff(even though its not as complicated as most), ironic considering the name of the forum haha.

I'm the same mate, trust me. Most this oc'ing stuff goes over my head. :)

I didn't wanna risk frying the laptop lol so had to do a bit of reading around, but all in all it was fairly easy this time. Oh and I am not patient at all - I think when oc'ing you should increase in 5mhz increments and test each time. I went from 450 straight to 500 etc, found it takes too long going up in 5s :p

I got a bit confused with that afterburner, gave up haha.
I was changing the settings, then i would close it, open it up again and the settings have changed!

I also had a go with that furmark, but it wasnt displaying any information like temperature etc. :-\ eek

Gpu-z is quite good for keeping an eye on gfx card temps.

Expect it to hit high 80s though running the furmark stability test.

Did some benchmarking last night using MSI Kombustor, which is an MSI specific version of Furmark. Benchmark or Afterburner wasn't working properly though since the overclocking slider made absolutely no difference to the result each time.

Downloaded 3DMark2006 and ran at defaults getting 2664. Will try cpu and gpu overclocking runs on the 3810TZG and report back over the weekend.

Sounds about bang on. Oc'ing the cpu won't affect the 3dmark06 score at all, but oc'ing the 4330 should push that up to around 3200.

Might try with that GPU overclock again today, got the software etc, just hoping the settings save this time, which they wouldnt before!

Think I was having that problem aswel, I was clicking save but it went straight back to default. I cannot remember from the top of my head how I fixed it, but keep trying and check in 'settings' in afterburner.

I have the option but it doesn't save. Meaning that the clocks never change from 450/600......

Adz, how on earth did you get it to work???? :D

Whatever I did, it took me 10 mins max using google or messing around in the settings to figure it out :p If you guys don't figure it out by tonight, I will let you know once I'm back from work. :)

Run SuperPi on your netbook and see how it compares to the 8371 for an indication of cpu performance, we are hitting around 25-26 sec on SuperPi to 1M.

And if you're still feeling confident run 3d mark 2006 for an idea of gfx performance, you are aiming for 3200 :p;)

......if you pull your finger out and tell us how you made that overclock stick :D :p

I really wish I could remember what I did. I was just on the laptop before and chose profile 1 (the oc settings) and clicked apply, and it was done. I do remember however watching this video before I did anything, so watch and follow and see if it helps:

Dragonuk, welcome!

I have to say I am very impressed that the 8371 does hold 2 hdds. Very much appreciate you signing up and giving us all this info mate. I am on my phone atm but am gonna have a proper read and look at the pics later.

Do you also have the 8371?
Have you fitted 2 hdds? If so, I'm guessing one SSD and the second the 320gb storage drive?
Have you oc'ed the ATI 4330 and if so, what clock speeds you getting?

DragonUK, I'd remove the link to the competitor mate - forum rules, don't want you getting banned! We have been subtley trying to hint to people that it is available from the 24 hours a day 7 days a week shop... :p

Cool . thanks :)

Ok here are the results then, I only did a short test while I was in a very warm room running off the battery.
