Acer 8371/3810 Owners Thread

Guys,

Has anyone actually fitted a SSD as per dragonuk's recommendations in their 8371? I just opened mine and I cannot for the life of me find the connector. is there a chance that our 8371 are actually different internally to the 3810?

Can you please take a picture of the inside of the 8371 mate and let us know if you manage to fit the SSD and also where it goes!?

I fitted a normal SSD in mine by removing the hdd, but I also want 2 hdds in there!

Absolutely no idea mate :( Only things I can really think of in that situation would be make sure it is firmly connected, make sure you have the latest bios. Is it not appearing in the bios?

Nothing whatsoever. I have tried to enable it but have been unable to do so. Rather frustrating...Am I the only who has actually tried this?

Yes, no one else has tried it yet. :P

Seriously though, most of us on here didn't even know it was possible to fit 2 hdds in the 8371. BTW did you buy a normal SSD or was it a smaller one? I am sure dragonuk will be along shortly with some suggestions. If the SATA port is there, un-used, and you have plugged the SSD in, it surely has to work. Is there no option in the bios to enable the SATA port?

I am absolutely positive (and probably totally wrong) that you need to find and enable it in the bios. It's in there, keep looking. BTW is there an option for HDD SMART in there?

Well what do you know? I just noticed that a small cable was not connected and guess what, it was the cable that connected the SATA to the motherboard. We now have a fully functioning SSD. Win 7 here we come!

LOL.

Pictures of the inside please, and where the SSD fits - since I was trying so desperately to help you out! :p So is it very easy to fit then? I already bought a normal sized SSD, can these be taken apart and reduced in size or do I need to sell this and buy the smaller version?

Well I am back posting in this thread again and for the first time it is not to praise this machine! The screen has just gone dead out of the blue it seems. I can hear windows still starts up but the backlight is completely gone. Browsing the last few pages I have seen others have had similar problems so it seems to be a common fault.

I have spoken to Acer and done as instructed by them, emailed them the invoice over and I have been told to contact them after 1 business day, so I will call them again now on Friday.

How have others found their RMA service?

Will they be bothered that I upgraded the HDD to a SSD? BTW I didn't even mention that to them, didn't see any need too.

customer service were very good if you get the details Friday I would say by mid next week it will be back with you. Given you send it off quickly. I would not say they will care. With me and their warranty sticker they said as long as nothing is broken they do not mind them being removed. So I doubt that they will say anything about it as a HD mod does not equal a broken screen. But service is good, better than what a remember from horror days before :)

That gives me some confidence anyway thanks, I will report back in due course.

Update: They have confirmed it's still in warranty. I just need to ring UPS to collect it now, will give them a call later today.

EDIT: UPS just came by to collect it now at 3pm, an hour after I rang them, not bad!

Update: Received a text message from Acer today saying the laptop has arrived at their repair centre. I think I may have it back by Tue/Wed at this rate which is very quick considering I first contacted them just 2 days ago!

When I get it back I am considering selling it as it isn't used that often.

We have had quite a few laptops in this house ie. my brother and sister, and I've never come across this issue before either. How would you normally fix the backlight on a laptop screen, does the whole screen need replacing or is it easily repairable?

My second 8371 was collected yesterday, decided to get a refund and spend a little more to get something with an i-series CPU in there.

What happened to it originally and to the second one, and after how long?

Mine has just been returned, very quick service by Acer I have to say. Will test it out this evening when I get home.

Agreed, just call up Acer. I rang them on Thursday, they picked it up from my house the same day. On Friday I received a text from them saying they have it at their repair centre and on Monday an email saying it's been repaired and shipped, it was back with me Tuesday. All you need to do is provide them with proof of purchase which you should have in your emails to confirm you have owned it less then 1 year.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies!

I've just found the invoice it came with. I'll call them up later and let you know how I get on.

One last question: Will I need to reflash this with the original oem BIOS? It's currently running dragon's 1.28 modified BIOS, so not sure if Acer will consider that as breaking the warranty...?

I had removed and sold the original HDD, and had replaced it with a SSD. They fixed the screen and sent it back exactly as I sent it, you don't even need to back anything up but I probably would just to be safe.
