Acer Predator CG437K P - 43", 4K, 144Hz, HDR-1000

I remember spending £500 on a 17" (maybe 19") Iiyama CRT way back when (early 90s?), then a like amount on a 22" Iiyama CRT. I've always taken the view that my eyes are worth protecting. £500 back then is over £1000 now.
Yeah that is true and I don't mind spending more for the eyes, but I am strugling to justify the price being more than my TV probably because I spend more time infront of the TV nowadays

I see this is on a UK site now for £1299 (albeit not in stock)... not sure it’s worth £200 over the Asus XG438Q (if that price sticks), but it is HDR-1000 (vs HDR-600 on the ASUS) with an extra DP 1.4 port, so I guess down to end user. I’ll await reviews though.

Yeah sadly I think the exchange rate has shafted us there, as its listed as 1250 euros whereas the Asus set their UK price of £1079 some time ago. That may change yet though.

On euro list price there was not going to be anymore than £100 between the two screens and for the 1000NITS and other bits I would have paid the extra.

I would guess there won't be much in the HDR performance anyway given the lack of FALD, and both will probably have very similar back-light solutions. Hard to see an argument for the Acer at this point, unless reviews highlight something particular.

I'd pay a bit more for the 144hz which I'm used to...

Asus is 120hz, right?

Yes, the XG438Q is 120Hz. Asus have another 43" on the way, which doesn't yet have a model designation or release date, which is 144Hz, HDR-1000 and has Display Stream Compression technology.

I expect this one to be through the roof regards price, so probably makes sense the XG438Q is coming in a bit cheaper.

I'll reduce my monitor down to 120hz this weekend and see how much difference I can feel in games.

This will help me determine what version I might get.

You'd also have to ask yourself how likely 144FPS is at 4K in the games you play.

Very good point. Actually if you could change the res to 1440p that would be ideal.

So work wise would be native 4k when I wanted to play a FPS just change down to 1440.

I used to regularly run my 2560 x 1440 @ 1920 x 1080 before I upgraded my graphics card. Can't say I really noticed a massive difference when I was actually playing unless you paused and inspected the image. I would do the same with a 4K to preserve the frame rate. Or use the dynamic resolution slider that seems to come built in to many games now.
