Acer XB270HU - Worlds First IPS, 1440p, 144hz, Gsync

I'm not one to notice these things so easy and I thought I would have a look on here to see if anyone was thinking the same. When I get to loading screens or darker scenes this "backlight bleed" as I now know its called is very noticeable.

I want to love this monitor because it shines in some areas but I see now it's not just something I have picked up on and seems to be a pretty big issue here for others too. I'll admit the photo makes it look worse than it is but its not far off. Also where the sticker has been pushed down has caused some bleed directly under.

Been looking forward to this for months and I cant help but feel disappointed. :(

To the people freaking out over backlight bleeding and IPS, to the point of calling it a conspiracy:

IPS used to be super expensive maybe 6-7 years ago, in the region of at least £1000 and above where it was a professional, workstation level item for the people who used them professionally for editing, etc. Brands like NEC, Eizo and to a less extent Dell, HP and Apple dominated that market. Those had little backlight bleeding or IPS glow, only because they could easily afford to increase their prices for very tight QA and no need for design compromises in terms of speed and cost.

The process of making IPS cheap and fast hasn't been without trade-off. One of them is less tight QA which results in more panel issues (which I still find unacceptable for things like pixel defects), one for making products with less than ideal backlight uniformity and IPS glow. You can't have an IPS monitor that costs below £1000, is pretty fast, and has great backlight uniformity and no IPS glow. You have to sacrifice one or two for the others right now.

Unless we get to the point where we can have OLED monitors, or we can individually isolate and dim each and every single IPS pixel with LEDs, the current issues will persist as they're fundamental to IPS design. Both solutions increase the cost exponentially right now and it may take another 5-10 years until they reach the consumer affordability stage. You can wait it out of course and use your 1080p old monitor, or you can get ready to make some compromises.

Also had nothing but issues with stutter that was never there before when using G-SYNC. GTA V looks and runs amazingly at around 90fps and it buttery smooth but Diablo 3 now runs like a dog with a constant strange slo mo stutter i've not seen before in a game that actually makes you feel a little sick :S

are the games set to full screen? few games where terrible for me but were set to borderless windowed (or words to that effect). changing to fullscreen totally changed it

yeah full screen - GSYNC enabled - primary monitor selected - vsync turned off in game - all the rest

like I said GTA V works flawlessly i'm actually taken back as to how good it runs and uses GSYNC but with the exact same settings im getting multiple issues in Diablo 3 and Dragon Age. Ergh.

So what do you peeps think I should do about the 2 dead pixels next to each other? they are touching so look like one. the thing is I know they are there and and I should ignore them? yes im probably paranoid but ive paid just short of £700 which is a massive a massive amount of money. Ive bought so many monitors in my life which were only cheap but never had a dead pixel :(.

Maybe im being fussy as they arnt in the middle of the screen but they are ****ing me off big time

It isn't normal, my Asus wasn't perfect but it's a world of difference to what some of us are having here.

It's only an issue if I have a plain black background as my wallpaper.

Changed it to a picture and the bleed is not visible.

At the end of the day, it's about what the monitor is like in a day to day usage scenario and I'm quite happy with it - I've more of a gripe with the cheapo bezel and the awful menu buttons that I have with the bleed!

It's a keeper for me unless something drastic goes wrong in the immediate future.

Someone said earlier, and I have have seen on the net while browsing. Vsync needs to be enable in diablo 3 for Gsync to work, but I don't have diablo 3 to test this.

For anyone thinking of buying one and sitting on the fence, here's my monitor as of right now (23:00 at night) with a normal wallpaper as my desktop.

It's a great screen from my perspective.

Exactly my opinion as well. I took the monitor out the screen protector and was like "WTF is this nasty plastic"

But since I've turned it on and used it for a bit I'm getting less bothered by it.

Try diablo at 120hz. The engine runs at 60, so you can run at 60, or 120 (doubling frames) but anything else will be adding in extra duplicated frames here and there, so will feel like micro stutter.

@Deks, send it back under CCR if you want to pay postage, or keep it if you want to live with it. Its up to you. On my first 30" (£850 odd) I had my first (and only) stuck pixel, but I could only see it on black, and only if I REALLY REALLY looked for it, so i chose to live with it, until it got replaced.

I was thinking of getting this monitor, but after the number of issues, even if this is all of the bad ones out of the entire 150 stock ocuk had, its too high of a chance for me. Rather wait for a brand with better QC, and without a stupid shiny bezel - I like my brushed alu bezel :/

No, you are not being fussy at all! You paid £700 for it!
I was waiting for this evening as I knew lot of you guys will post impressions, as this monitor finally became available. I feel sorry for you guys and I am really disappointed myself as well. I really want to upgrade my Benq 2420T for fast 1440p. First Asus Rog Swift is out of the equation, now this is a no go as well:(

There are a couple of fringe cases that NVIDIA has needed to build for, including frame times below 33ms (under 30 FPS), where the image on the panel might visibly darken or decay if it isn’t refreshed automatically, even if a new frame isn’t ready. Also, some games have issues with G-Sync (Diablo III, for example, doesn’t have a true full screen mode) and have to be disabled, either through a profile or manually to avoid artifacts.

Not sure if any help mate

cheers for the D3 tips guys but i've tried them all - thought it best to before moaning about it on here. I'm probs going to go back to my £100 1080p Asus seem to get smoother results with V-Sync than with G-Sync and thats a deal breaker for me. Totally gutted.

This is pretending there is not a problem:) Day to day usage includes watching movies in dark environment, like with night scene and instead of blacks you get horrible bleed. Maybe we should get movies with options, like in case of subtitles, Nolan original version of Dark Knight or sunny version of the events for people with special equipment for what, 700 quids? No, thank you.

You have to remember that people use these in different scenarios.

If I'm gonna watch a movie, then it will be on my Pioneer Kuro not my new monitor :-)

So to me, it's not an issue.

Carp diem.
