Acer XB270HU - Worlds First IPS, 1440p, 144hz, Gsync

Thank you. Thought as much but it's good to hear from someone in the know. I hope we don't have to wait till March for professional reviews, even if we do have to wait that long before the thing goes on sale.

I'll definitely be in touch with Acer, although the list of monitors I want to review is absolutely mind-blowing. ;)

So then *rolls up sleeves*

Possibility here of 5120x2880 @ 144hz with G-Sync and a proper 10bit IPS panel? Not bad but i can nitpick a fault as amazing as that setup sounds.

Lack of ULMB, And probably too big at 27 inches. The ppi is not great so DSR will be mandatory and thats a HARSH requirements. I much prefer 24" 1080p with ULMB so i can use the proper DSR 4x and smoothing at 0%. But i would KILL to get my hands on G-Sync and 144hz as well.

:s

Oh don't forget the coating! Anything but gloss on IPS = horrible grain and terrible ips blacks at night. Gloss is something i am sort of spoiled on now too with my FG2421 because it has everything this monitor wont and there will probably be a £600 difference in the two which is shocking.

Gloss for maximum vibrancy
Ability to perfectly match x4 DSR and smoothing 0% at 4K
Only 24hz less
Resolution irrelveant due to DSR
Lacks ULMB

Yea im going to say G-Sync is all i will miss here and that 24hz. Thats a big toss up give up gloss and ULMB for 24hz G-Sync and have to lose half the res due to blur when i move my mouse. I do admit though 4K DSR is more like 6xMSAA it is better than 4X for sure but i think 5K is the true sweetspot for having literally no jaggies.

Im out i think! :D

the Eizo FG2420 doesn't have a gloss screen coating?

also, there's no official confirmation that the Acer XB270HU won't feature ULMB. in fact, i would be surprised personally if it didn't given the screen can support up to 144Hz refresh rate, and ULMB is closely linked to G-sync

Stand up infront any modern TN monitor and say that again ;)

And before anyone says anything, yes I know one doesnt game standing up but when your friends and family are viewing your gameplay its going to look pants to them :D

Haha, yes.

Well you can quite clearly see the differences when sitting as well as your eyes view the top and bottom of the screen (and area in between) at different angles as well. Viewing angles on TN displays haven't really improved at all recently, although other areas have. I'm not sure where people get this false notion from - probably by misunderstanding the implications of something like '8-bit colour'.

they are claiming 1ms, but I would take that with a very large pinch of salt as there isn't really a standardised test for GtG testing and several monitor makers are known to understate transition times when independently tested

They aren't claiming anything yet, but I expect ~5ms to be specified - which as you say, doesn't really mean much anyway. 1ms is specified for the XG270HU which uses a TN panel.

I think your "average" gamer just doesnt know any better, and I dont mean that in a condicending way, rather they are used to a TN panel experience.

As you say even straight on the colour reproduction is not great, and one only has to move around slightly to see quite a significant colour / gamma shift.

I think folks see recent TN film panels as "improved" because they are now using true 8-bit panels, so that accounts for more colours without dithering, but it sure as heck doesnt equals image uniformity from wide viewing angles, or indeed head on :p

Im a digital artist and use my beloved Asus ProArt for digital colouring daily, im also crazy for Battlefield 4 so this Acer will be a nice addition to my monitor setup... thats if I can get my hands on one this century ! :D

Semi matte/gloss then? You can see it isnt the full on gloss/glass type but it is way more glossy than any ips i ever owned. I would call it gloss coming from a Dell. But yea maybe it will have ULMB who knows i was also wrong about DSR 4x and smoothing 0% which can be done to 5K i think.

But i still bet it has the usual matte coating on IPS meaning awful image quality just like 99% of the computer monitors. Even the Eizo has trouble going up against my old 32" Sony Television in movies. And it has the highest contrast and coating of them all?

It uses an AHVA panel which so far all use a 'semi-glossy' surface. Let's hope this isn't the exception ;)

and if so, that would make it very similar to the Eizo FG2421 which is a semi glossy coating :)

it's also possible Rofflay is making comparisons to older generation IPS panels which were VERY grainy and had aggressive AG coating. that has changed within the last couple of years and modern IPS coatings are nice and light. not as semi glossy as AHVA panels or MVA panels, but certainly much lighter than before

Pretty much need someone on OC to review both and compare Agaisnt similar monitors in price range when announced, if the ips is 3ms or less might be worth for the hardcore gamers for fps otherwise tn version would be better but that makes in in competition with the swift so price will play a big part
