Adobe Lightroom

Maybe I should have been more specific, I was looking for peoples experience of using lightroom. What people were using it for and how it fits in with or works in addition to photoshop. I have read the product informatin from adobe and read other information on the internet. Thanks for the link to the faq anyway.

I am still lost with the program, the sharpening doesn't seem to do anything, can't figure out how to add a tag on each photo easily (I can do it with a slideshow thou), and worst of all, I dunno how to save an image after doing some editing !!!! :(

The sharpening and noise reduction tools in Lightroom still need a lot of development; I'm still using Photoshop for those tasks.
To save the file you need to go to the Library module and click the export button (next to import :) )
I'm not sure what you mean by tags ?

I suggest you read and watch some of the tutorial websites and videos that are around.

One thing to keep in mind is that Lightroom is not meant to be a replacement for Photoshop. The editing tools in Lightroom (heal, sharpening etc) are much less powerful than those in Photoshop. Where Lightroom excels is in managing hundreds or thousands of RAW or JPEG files and being able to develop them quickly.

Adobe are releasing the Lightroom SDK soon so then developers will be able to launch extra modules like Sharpening and Noise reduction - there is a lot more still to come !

Lightroom is a superb package for the following reasons :
  • Import images with META data and keywords for easy searching and filing.
  • Image flag rating system and filtering options to only show the specific images you want to work on
  • Sort files by anything you like e.g. by camera, by lens, by shutter speed, yada, yada ….
  • Fast Raw image processing - The ability to adjust hundreds or thousands of RAW (or JPEG) files quicker than anything else I've used.
  • Extensive editing options that are intuitive to use - Exposure, White Balance, Vibrance etc
  • Live preview of White Balance changes using the dropper and Navigation preview
  • Compare side-by-side before and after editing changes
  • The option to create stacks of images to improve viewing and photo management
  • Output edited files to a custom web gallery.
  • Present edited files in a custom slideshow.
  • Print contact sheets from hundreds of RAW files in seconds - an amazing feature !!
  • Non-destructive editing environment - Adjustments applied to an image are 100% reversible at any time.

Have any other RSE users followed the link in the email and got a serial number?

Space where the serial number should have been was blank for me...

They say its the 23rd Feb for RSE users.

They are mistaken then :)

Has anyone here had a good play with both Aperture and Lightroom and got views on them both ?

I have a love/hate relationshio with Aperture and didnt really get on with the lightroom beta :s

Today got my free Lightroom (RSP) serial number and ive exported my entire Photo collection(13000shots) from Aperture and ive re-imported them using the new (v1.5) external source option... Ive then imported them into Lightroom and im going to have a play with both apps for a while to see which I prefer.

Im liking Lightroom v1, it seems much quicker than the beta, but, unlike a lot of others I dont think its any faster at all than Aperture. I do like the interface, the quick ability to find images by Lens, Camera, Date and other metadata info is quite useful.

The review (linked above) sumed up Lightroom well.

The other Lightroom advantage: Plug-in architecture
One of the most exciting—but currently unused—things in Lightroom is that it will be plug-in savvy (for those wondering, Photoshop plug-ins do not work in Lightroom since they deal with images very differently). The prospect of having indispensable tools within a lossless RAW workflow is exciting and hopefully it will prompt Apple to build the same feature into Aperture. As was mentioned, Bibble Pro has Noise Ninja integration already but a truly open SDK for lossless floating point images in Lightroom will help push the RAW development stage of apps to be more powerful and for photographers, that means higher-quality images nearer to their final desired result with some creative options thrown in for good measure. These are fun times.

As like many of you I've been messing with Lightroom for a few days now and so far so good. There is one thing which is bugging me and I can't tell if it's something I can turn off:

In the folders view I've imported my "new images" subfolder which has all my shots which haven't yet been fully sorted and burned to DVD but if I click on "new images" I see all the files from the sub folders as well in the grid view. Is there any way this can be set to only show the files in the selected directory? My opinion is that I should only see what is actually in the folder, if a file isn't in that folder I don't want to see it.

On the other hand maybe I'm just being old fashioned and paranoid. I like to know where files actually are so that I can make sure they're backed up correctly. I'm beginning to wonder if I need to embrace the new technology and start using Collections etc in Lightroom. Are there any decent workflow guides out there that would suggest how to deal with backing up stuff while using Collections?

It's an annoying feature but currently files in sub folders are auto imported with no option to disable it.

Collections were phased out from Beta 4 to v1; although Adobe as still supporting them during the import library phase from Beta 4 (do you don't lose files etc)

That response was aimed towards rpstewart :)

From memory there is an option somewhere to disable card imports. I'm at work right now and don't have access to Lightroom to check.

There is a little camera icon in your task bar (where other icons are). right click and then disable will do the trick. If you don't want to disable it permanently, then just select exit, and it will be back when you reboot.

Starting to fall for Lightroom ;)

Only issue i still have is getting the raw files from Aperture into Lightroom. Anyone got any ideas on this ?

Also has anyone found a good workflow tutorial - i dont find the adobe manuals/help system intuitive.
