Right guys, I’m hoping someone could give me some advice/ideas/links to their work as me and Mr Betty are having a photo session with Venture at the weekend for a belated Valentines present, and we are struggling for ideas at the moment!

We like the idea of a black and white portrait with maybe a bit of colour (I have a turquoise necklace we’d both like to capture the colour of) but any other recommendations would be welcome!

Here’s the website: www.thisisventure.co.uk incase you want a look. We like anything in black and white in the portfolio section :)

I know it maybe too late if you have already bought a voucher or whatever but have you considered giving a local photographer with a studio a go? The reason I ask is that they are likely to offer you a cheaper deal.

It wasnt that expensive anyway, and yes Ive already got the voucher :p

I quite like the topless cuddle pose, with the lady at the front looking down and the man wrapping his arms around her either looking at the camera or eyes closed.

I would demonstrate but I am at work and have no lady model to hand! :p

Just out of interest, how many photos does the voucher allow you to take away with you or is the voucher for the sitting only?

*Edit - After looking at the site I guess it's the 5x7 for £25?

*More edit - ;) or is it part of those red letter experience days you can get?

yes but they will give you the hard sell to buy the bigger more expensive prints or loads of small ones!

MacX, I was born in Kettering and lived not too far from there up til 2001!

You mean like the pics Desmo and Piggy had done a while back as those are exactly what you are referring to.

As to ideas for poses have a look on deviantart and search in the photography section in the portrait sections as i found this pose there Example 1 and this Example 2

Actually, that was my thought as well. Someone I know has experience of some of these photo studios, and you REALLY have to be very firm if you only want to walk out with one photo and your wallet intact!

Thread hijack alert - I've lived in Kettering most of my life and it hasn't changed much since 2001. Peterboghorror probably wasn't far enough to escape though was it? ;)

Anyway, I only ask what was purchased because I have now idea as to how much choice SexyBetty will have with Venture regarding the creative aspects of the studio session.

Don't think I have seen those.

Not too sure if venture will do that sort of photography though.

I won't go near them after I heard how much my mums neighbour paid! £2k+ i do believe!

Saying that we have done a few portraits in our time and can quite easily come up with something that rivals the 'venture' look! (we run our own part time portrait and wedding company but don't like to mention it!! :p)

I am considering having a photoshoot done with my bf but haven't booked anything yet - the £25 Venture voucher looks like a fair deal, but their website does not give any indication of how much additional prints/pictures are beyond the one that is 'included'.
I am a bit nervous about using somewhere like this, as I would be worried that they play on your emotions a bit and make you feel like you have to buy lots of prints or take one of their (possibly quite expensive) arty products. The website suggests that during the 'Preview' stage of the 'Experience': "Be prepared. A lot of people get quite emotional at this bit. (In a good way!)". I'm not sure that I could cope with that - emotional in a good way also means that my credit card could end up flexing a little more than I was expecting!
Does the voucher you have indicate how much any additonal pics might cost?
Let us know how you get on!

Hello Hagel, I think Andyborzi hinted at this in one of his earlier posts. A friend of mine has also had some experience of the hard sell at Venture. I'm sure Venture don't make a profit on the £25 vouchers and rely on people's hearts overriding the locks on their credit cards when they see all the lovely pictures.

Personally, the styles at Venture aren't to my taste. Maybe I'm old and untrendy! ;) When I looked at the portfolio on the website I see pictures that would be great for CD album covers, family holiday brochures, perfume adverts, even one that would work as an NSPCC poster, but only a few that I would be happy with as a portrait.

Anyway, that's just me. I hope SexyBetty (who is bound to be more trendy than me! :D) has a great time, BUT I do hope she is aware of the possibility of a hard sell at the end of the session.

I will echo the above, My Wife, Son and I had a shoot at Venture 15 months ago, from the 'free' voucher. It was great fun, we went along knowing what the score was, and knew what pictures we wanted before we went in. The hard sell does indeed come after the shoot, when they project all the images on a wall, and just let your heart strings do the work. We knew how much we wanted to spend, and had long discussions with them about it. In the end we got 7 framed images (30*10, 3 10*10 2 8*10 and the 'free' 7*5) all for thess than £1k.
It really does depend on the designsand style you like, if you like Ventures style, go for it.

We were very please with the images. They were a present to my Wife and I from ourselves for out new born

HOW MUCH!?!

I've seen nice wedding albums done for a fraction of that cost. Although a 30x10 canvas(?) print is pretty expensive where ever you go. :)

I'm really glad you had fun and liked them though. Good that you had a budget to stick to. I wonder how many people get REALLY carried away? I'm in the wrong business! :D

It IS quite a lot I guess, but we got exactly what we wanted. On the flip side, our wedding album cost less than half that for 10 times as many photos! Ahh well its only money (I had just sold a 'spare' house, so had a bit of spare capital)
I agree it could be VERY easy to get carried away and spend silly money if you dont have it, they even do a finance scheme!

Well, you had a budget and the cash. I've done similar things myself where the cost didn't REALLY matter and I was aware of what was going on. Sometimes it's fun just to join in with the game where you KNOW they're using every trick in the book to part you from your money. :D

Though the more I hear about Venture from people, the more I think of Timeshare sales from a few years back. Another emotionally charged buying/selling situation!

AndyBorzi!
if you appear in here again. I like your work on your website. Had a feeling you knew exactly what you were talking about. :D
