Aero/Gains Thread

Contemplating risking a purchase of one of the Chinese zipp 808 nsw and testing it against a proper one to see difference in aero. Will price a front one up later and see if it's worth the risk.

Would be interesting for sure! Let us know what sort of pricing it is approx. I won't ever bother with Zipp, too pricey for me, be a FFWD disc and F6R front for me in the future.

Just bought an immaculate Kask Bambino off TT forum so will have it for my next 10 on Wednesday. It'll be worth 30 seconds hopefully hehe.

What helmet you running currently? I'm possibly looking at trying to squeeze my bonce into something smaller, cda from medium to small for my javelin is about 7w equivalent.

Kask Mojito road helmet :p so anything is going to be a step up big time for me aero wise haha.
I could not fit into a size small anything, worried the medium Bambino coming might be a bit tight. I am skinny minny but I have a big head. It's because my brain is so big you see :)

Shamrock - You definitely need to be sitting further back, you look almost in front of your BB position wise in that picture. I think if you raise your bar extensions slightly and be sitting further back plus raise your saddle in tiny increments you should get a better position.

SoliD - Amazing work, very well done. I am utterly baffled again at the times you are achieving on the watts, you are absolutely nailling the aero! :D
I think I am going to have to come and crash at yours some time and nail some TT's on your courses also, they look faaaast!
What was weather like for the area during the TT?
Got a 10 tomorrow night, <1000hPa forecast but cold and rain... ugh!

Dowsetts ride with power from the national TTs up on Strava.

Ah right, just the 400watts? Christ!

Just checked pressure from Monday night, 1019hpa, with 12km/h wind from the west. So not especially quick night!

I had a look on Weather Underground for a LWS in your area for that TT and yeah, conditions were pretty naff so makes it even more impressive pal, well done :) Weather Underground is my new toy by the way, give it a look, they have local weather stations from people all over the shop and you can see historical/forecast weather data to your hearts content. Addictive wee tool, the last thing us data lovers need! Have fun :)

Shamrock. Quintana.Flat Back. TT Position stuffs etc

I have spent a lot of time worrying about this recently dude. I am deciding not to get too hung up on it, I have an arched back and apparently "that is not aero" and it "should be flat!"..... But I beg to differ and think the whole flat back thing is total BS in terms of it being the being all, end all in TT'ing. Let's have a few examples:
How about the 25 record holder and 5 times Nashy TT champ?

Or the previous World and multi German nashy champ?

Or some lying cheater?

Yeah, 100% need a perfectly flat back to be fast in a time trial

Very possible float night :) 998hpa and the warm sun is shining!
Club 10 has a hill in it.
And I have a Bambino now, I just Fairy Liquid my visor to death.
Sub 20 tonight boys.

40 watts down....
Pouring rain. Slow course and I have never seen so many midges in my life, we were literally black with midges on, disgusting.
So I came 3rd with a 22:54 which is a 6 second PB.

All that changed was tiny tweaks to position and wearing a Kask Bambino. Explain that. Genuinely think my Garmin Vectors were completely under-reading tonight by a long way. Weird.

If you are offered an Ex-Demo FFWD solid rear wheel at half the RRP by a LBS...BUT...have yet to actually get in to TT's though are planning to...do you:

a) throw your money at them

or

b) hold fire as there will always be other oppurtunities

or

c) walk out with a new bike because N+1

B.
Clincher = ewwww.
FFWD discs and the like constantly coming up for sale in tip top condition on TT forum for that sort of price or lower and in full tub form  Plenty opportunities in future, what you are being presented isn't as super glorious as it appears!

I just received my carbon rails Fizik Arione K3. It's a lovely saddle. I have Arione R3 on winter bike and Arione R1 on race bike so thought this would be a good shout to try.
I have the Fizik Tritone on my TT bike just now and tried tweaking and adjusting a lot but I cannot get on with it. Most people I know use one, but it's just not for me so is for sale on the TT forum now to fund the K3 purchase. I think the Tritone is too wide on the front for me, I like it being cut short to hang off the nose of it but it's way too wide as I am very narrow it seems so just doesn't work for me.

Other change is my bar extensions. Below is a chart, I currently have the T5+ and my girlfriend bought me the T4+ which still to fit but reckon these will suit me a lot more -

ext-t-cbnblk.jpg

I also have my skinsuit back which was @ NoPinz and has had the aero speed pocket added :) Super neat job, very professional and quick turnaround so could not hesitate in recommending NoPinz to anyone considering it.

I still have not done any form of aero testing until I get comfortable and happy on my TT bike as that's something I haven't achieved yet. I am very narrow on the front which is a huge advantage so once I get comfy and tweaking I think big gains can be made.

If you have the T4+ bars that means you now have the L1 under-bar bracket?

My most recent changes were an L1 bracket and a -60 degree stem to get as low as I can at the front. I don't really see how I can make my pads any narrower. I think the new helmet is better and so I'm trying to sell my Bambino.

I don't have the L1, however, I didn't even know about it so thanks very much pal you have helped me a lot by mentioning that!!
I was complaining I couldn't get my pads any narrower at the front and that L1 bracket will allow me to do that and go a little lower on the front, which is another thing I could possibly do with is slightly lower. I think I am stuck with the stem I have but looking at that L1 I can't tell you how much you helped me right now! :)
Where did you buy the L1 bracket from?
Which Bambino do you have? Year and is it Pro? Which visor?

Also, dem biceps!

Ahh, exact same Bambino as mine! I want a mirrored visor, found one on eBay but it's £60 might just take the punt. If you stick your helmet on TT forum it will definitely sell!

Funny enough I was just looking at Profile Design stuff on Wiggle when I read your reply. Was hoping you'd say you found the bracket somewhere and it was a tenner :p PD stuff seems to be a pain to get stock wise anywhere. My girlfriend had big problems when she ordered my extensions, ended up getting 10% of price refunded as they mucked about so much.

Dumoulin's position is insane!

Where are you getting all these bars from?

She found and bought them on Tredz for me - http://www.tredz.co.uk/profile-design-aeroslashtri-bars

However, they did say they were in stock, then proceeded to take over a week to even post them out. So I am assuming they don't hold much PD stock (like everywhere!) and order from Germany and then send out to you. Basically they are a middle man and would be easier to order from PD directly, but hey, nothing is ever that straight forward

Finally managed to go to an event with a decent photographer! Critique please. Struggling to think as looks like I can get lower, but will close off hip flexor. Possibly lower saddle and push back? My front is very narrow, but got some ski bends on the way to stretch me out a bit and put my hands in a more natural/comfortable position.

Frame looks a tad small for you possible on that first picture?
Reckon you can go lower on front and think you need try moving saddle back slightly to stretch you out more, that will hopefully actually give you a bigger power output as I'd hope that puts your centre more over the BB on that frame but you'll need test that out and see as it could easily cause the opposite.
Front does look very narrow, you look perfect on the bars I think and head position good, just a bit lower and if could stretch yourself out a little more as per above I think you could make some gains with position.

Different colour Velotoze.... other than offering a headshot from 600yards in your next TT, I am not sure what else to advise with regards that :p:p

Almost final piece in the puzzle for next year.

Zipp 808 running an FMB 22mm Silk Competition CX.

That gum sidewall :cool::cool:

What's the deal down there running 808 on the front? No drama's?
900 is a no-no isn't it?
CTT is so different. I am trying to get my head around it all as all our TT's up here are BC and there is big differences. I hope at some point next year to do some TT's certainly in Manc/Lancashire area but I've no idea of courses/rules or what the heck goes on.... My club is CTT affiliated thankfully.

in what respect xdcx, as in legal to ride it? Only about 3 wheels you can't ride the 1080 Zipp, Planet X 5 spoke and one other. If you mean from a handling perspective I've no idea, rode a Tri spoke but never had issues with wind/handling.

CTT handbook should be available for any club member from your secretary if you're affiliated. Might be worth getting them to buy one if they haven't and having a read of rules.

Sorry it is the 1080 I was thinking off and mistakenly thought it was the 900 which was sketch.

I train with our secretary so can get the handbook no bother. I was having a quick look through it on way to the TTT champs in August but man there is heaps in it! Will need to proper sit and waste some life reading it. Although there will be a new one with the 3cm rule amendment soon, of course :p

You buy that 808 with the FMB on? Those meant be super quick, rare as hens teeth though so guessing you bought second hand with that tub glue'd?

Why did you go with 808 over a Hed3 or a FFWD tri? Just curious!

Most TTs in scotland are done under ScottishCycling so the rules are different from CTT races.
I think it'll soon all move over to CTT though. CTT have a region setup for scotland now and there's a few (15ish) TTs planned in scotland next year. None near me+xdcx though.

I think I have a copy of the handbook if you want xdcx? No events up this way next year though so it probably isnt of that much interest?

The only course last year was the Glasgow course was it?
What are the 15 Scottish ones next year?

Chris has handbook also so will grab off him or you in the new year if it is on the cards that I do some TT's down Lancashire and surrounding. I'll be dragged down there next year on occasion with her so might as well get some use of being down there :p

I've got a spreadsheet from the CTT Scotland secretary saying that this is the info he has sent to CTT for inclusion in the handbook next year so I guess they are not all on the site yet.

I think last year was the first time any CTT races were run in Scotland? So I guess those courses on the site are the ones which were used last year.

edit: sent you email

Ah nice one, thanks!
Cambusbarron getting a CTT 10 and 25. Decent :cool::cool:

Seen some info on Scotland getting the Nashy 10 in 2018 also. They looking for clubs to put forward interest.

I thought it would be stability.
Doing a lot of reading on tri spokes but I don't think I would get away with one on the junk we ride around on up here. Roads are a shambles.

All you boys should just come and TT up here. You'll get tutted at but you can go full superman nutcase position if you want and won't get DQ'd. Slower courses though so not worthwhile.
