After a sporty a car around £2k... what not to get? What to get :D

Yeah the rattle is the dephaser.

Can be driven like that but will need to be replaced eventually. When its replaced you have to get the cambelt changed again which makes it an expensive job, around £560.

Might just get a Ford Focus 1.8 cus I think ya need at least 3k get something quick that's not a shed.
Time is up end Sep but have a week off then but no pressure in finding a sensible car then. At least I tried.

£3.5k is a silly sum to spend on an eleven year old 325ti - £2.5k is plenty, nobody likes them. Don't know why you're insisting on cars from dealers though, it's near impossible to tell anything about the last person that owned the car (unless it's full of dents)

I have been following this thread because I am in the same situation as the op. I don't want hot hatch sort of thing but seriously, can a half decent BMW be had for under 3k?

If you're looking specifically for an e46 compact then yes it will. People start off trying to sell them at real e46 money then quickly realise nobody is interested at that price!

I'd expect £2.5-3k to get a thoroughly decent one, spend any more and you'd be as well buying a "real" e46

How about a VW Corrado? The VR6 and the G60 will both give 22mpg urban - they look nice and both will hit 60 sub 7.5 seconds - automatic spoiler - VW reliability - what's not to like?

(downside - you will always be fixing it) ;p

You can buy one of these for 2k now ? I looked for a car ten years ago for 2k and really didnt find anything much. Im impressed if it got cheaper since then and I was buying from auction which is where the dealers buy from

Mondeo 1.8 (I thought it was broke but its just slow tho v-reliable).
lol cheapest 'fast' cars I know of would be twin cam Honda engines, 1.6 and up. With vtec would be nicer and not sluggish around town or cost a lot. Cheapest Ive seen is 100
No point buying cheap then spending another 3k on bills or you could just get an old bmw like the 7 series I was offered for 700 :D
What about that V6 mondeo, it always sounds good to me and plenty people here know about them properly

Noticed the v6 Mondeo as I was looking through them. Although its 60 time is similar to the 1.8 but it does 19mpg instead of 25mpg. Plus they're much rarer.
Looks like 2.5k gets an 05 facelift Mondeo. I'd even go diesel now as driving that 04 Clio Sport the other night really put me off a fast car: it was a 2.3k shed!

I think it only put you off french pieces of plastic.
Don't get me wrong, the 172 is a very fun and chuckable car and nobody can deny that. But in terms of reliability, rattles, build quality, interior, and small things such as how the clutch/gearbox feel like etc it is just same as a regular clio - nothing short of pathetic. I'm fairly certain that a LCR would be a much nicer overall package (obviously slower) than an 172.

2300 is not a lot of money in the great scheme of things though.

You do get what you pay for with hot hatches due to the nature of abuse they're bound to get :)

Of course, but that's partly what I'm getting at too. He's talking about spending nearly 3k which will get you a "good" example of many of the cars he has randomly spouted off about but has went to see 4 cheap and rough 182's from dealers that all have what is one of the main faults with the car (that a little research would have shown to look for) and now decides that a car with a decent engine isn't for him.....

Tbh I've been waiting for the "Bought a 1.6 focus". When I was able to afford to insure and run some of the cars I'd always wanted I didn't create a massive thread on the internet about them, I had a think about what I liked, looked at the prices then went out and found some decent examples, bought them and changed if I didn't like / grew bored of the car. Had my fingers burnt once or twice with the overall quality of the car but at this end of the market you'll never lose much money anyway - there's huge demand for cheap, fun cars.

worth a look?

170brake, 32MPG, cheap as chips, reliable as, er, chips? :D

Naa, I could get something better, though perhaps not quicker. Plus that looks like a 1 MOT car, as in next MOT in May its bye, bye.

I've had my thirst for speed quenched by sheds, bald tyres & faded paint.
I'm going to be realistic & get something reliable & sensible, something like this but a few less miles & maybe a diesel 130 as I have more money too..

£2,195 Ford Mondeo 1.8 LX 5DR 2006

Do you even know what you want? Why not at least get a 2l Mondeo if you're going down that route. A TDCI one is a particularly stupid idea seeing as you're worried about things going wrong.

On what grounds would it be a write off. Engine should be ok and bodywork is not terminal either
clutch brakes, cambelt maybe all the bills I would expect on the downside. So long as the engine is fine its probably reasonable to expect more then 1 year
