Age of conan - World of warcraft

You mean aside from both being subscription based, both being fantasy based, both involving levelling your character through levels, both have PvE and PvP aspects, both involving questing, both involving crafting, both involving items with stats on them, both involving melee using combat skills, both involving spells, both having skills/spells given to you dependant on the level you have achieved, both involving some form of instancing, both involving pvp "mini-games", both involving dungeons, both involving mob bosses which you group up to kill, both involving a colour con system, both involving an XP system which is raised by killing mobs/doing quests, both having respawn systems.

Yep, you're quite right, nothing in common.

ok prolly i should have said MMO fantasy rpg but i thought every1 would get that but u dint get 2nd part of my posts as i can see.
Imo u cant compare things that are orientated for different target groups with one having head start of several years. If u want to compare them then compare it to WoW when it 1st came out not to one thats out now.

Conan isn't fantasy, it's swords and sorcery. :)

I promised myself I wouldn't get too involved in this thread, and someone's going to take unnecessary offence to what I am about to say, but if I wanted to play with elves then I have LOTRO. WOW never "did it for me" in a fantasy capacity. The lore, in my personal opinion, is totally uninspiring, and it's the lore that makes games like LOTRO and AOC epic and inspiring for me.

I didn't like the visual style of WOW either. I know a lot of people love it, but I just prefer more realism. I also like "grittyness" and, while LOTRO can't deliver on this due to the nature of the universe it's set in, AOC truly does shine in this area (no pun intended).

I won't deny that Age Of Conan has had a rough start, but as you can see we're now getting bi-weekly updates and the one that went live has tons and tons of bug and balance fixes. If the following bi-weekly updates are anywhere near as big as today's update then it won't be long at all until the rough edges are smoothed out.

What part of sorcery isn't fantasy?

Have a look at some fantasy art, it's all muscly chaps with swords and girls in skimpy outfits casting spells. In my eye's Conan is as much fantasy as WoW even though it doesn't have Orc's or Trolls. What about all the mythical creatures in Conan?

I thought it was generally accepted wisdom that Conan was "low fantasy", while WoW/EQ/Lotro were "high fantasy"?

Anyone play a Bear Shaman? I've been playing this game for a few days and rolled one of these (lvl 12 atm :S ) - finding that I die a lot lol. Heard it gets easier at lvl 15. Anyone care to comment?

There is a difference between the "high fantasy" and "swords and sorcery" genres.

"Low fantasy" and "swords and sorcery" are basically interchangeable terms.

There's a big difference between LF/S&C and HF though.

Defining Swords And Sorcery

The term was first coined in 1961 when the British author Michael Moorcock published a letter in the fanzine Amra, demanding a name for the sort of fantasy-adventure story written by Robert E. Howard. He had initially proposed the term "epic fantasy". However, the celebrated American S&S author Fritz Leiber replied in the journal Ancalagon (6 April 1961) suggesting "sword-and-sorcery as a good popular catchphrase for the field".
Robert E. Howard and his Conan stories basically invented the Swords & Sorcery genre.

For the record I have just cancelled my AoC subscription. Hasn't grabbed my attention, so I'm going back to WoW to level from 60 to 70 instead in preparation for WotLK. Conan's ok, but things really bug me about it. Way too much instancing in my eye's, Nighttime - wtf, pay to play single player game, no thanks, I've got Oblivion for that. Lack of start areas - Doing Tortage more than once is sooooo boring. Combat - I don't have enough fingers/hands to run around clubbing/casting.

These are my personal views and I'm prepared to accept that lots of other people love it, I just don't.

I may come back in time, but with the WoW expansion and Warhammer also due out, any changes to AoC are going to have to be pretty special to attract my attention.

I'm not disagreeing with the rest of your post since you're entitled to your opinion if those things bother you. But surely you're aware that the single-player "night time" aspect of Age Of Conan is only there in the Tortage newbie zone, and not only that but you can go into "day time" in that zone whenever you want to.

lol, yeah I realise that :D
Although Nighttime does continue once you've left Tortage, I'm pretty sure it picks up again at level 30 and again at 50.

I'm also aware that you can skip the story mode, but if you do that then you don't get your blues when you leave Tortage.

guys i think u dont understand what i said in the 1st place where i said that imo WoW is targeting teenagers with no life (yes bit hars but thats my opinion of wow) now from my post that u all quote, if u dont read my 1st post, it does look like i think that about all mmo games. So do read all relevant posts b4 qouting reply to one person that found my opinion offensive and called me idiot.
I never said that becouse u play wow or any other mmo u have no life as i play mmos myself. So b4 calling anyone an idiot do read the posts from that person.

Ive started up a Bear Shaman, ive not seen many of them about so i thought id make one. Only up to lvl 6, but havnt died yet. They seem to be to be the Druid (nwn) or the Fury (eq2) equivilant.

You're an idiot.

You not on the WoW forums now. Kindly post valid posts.

I personally feel AoC is really poor, currently. To highlight this in the beginning, because it is new, that does not give it an excuse to not be finished, firstly because you would not pay for an unfinished car, and secondly because when WoW/EQ2 were released, they were the first main MMOs. Funcom already has two to three well established MMOs to compete with, and so why should people pay to beta test when they can go and play one of those?

My gripes with AoC are (from the PoV of a LVL80 ToS and 60 Conq)

  • Poor itemisation
  • No variety in armour sets, when over 1500 sets were promised
  • Item stats do not make sense (42% Tap Mana does not equal 42%)
  • A lot of stats are not currently implemented
  • Stat caps are fail
  • A lot of skills such as endurance and runspeed do not currently work
  • Healers in the game are actually DPS/CC with a few poor HoTs, not something I was expecting
  • People can oneshot other people
  • Crafting is still bugged
  • DirectX10 is not even implemented yet
  • It took 2? weeks to come out with rulesets, and they are still vague
  • Instancing outdoor zones is absolutely ridiculous
  • Finding group players on map is silly
  • No summoning to instance etc.
  • Mounts are currently useless, 3G for a 20% horse that is currently bugged
  • Collision detection in cities makes it hard to move around

I could go on, but I am boring myself.

Edit: And the main gripe is the upcoming prison system, forcing you to do grind quests, for PVPing (albeit against low levels, but that's life on a PVP server) on a FREE FOR ALL PVP server.

Robert E. Howard wrote the Conan stories in the 1930's when they were called Weird Fiction were published along with the stories of H.P.Lovcraft and others.

Now a Cthulu mmo would be fun.......
