Hi all,

I need an air conditioning unit because I honestly don't think I will survive through the summer with my bedroom this hot.
Are the portable unit's worth it?
I am looking at spending a max of around £400 as long as It's good.

Any advice?!

I've had a look at homebase, but I don't really understand the BTU numbers etc...

Is their a particular make/model I should be looking at?
Do they actualy work?!

I got a 9000 btu air compressor one and its more than enough for a large room and could probably do a an average house, just make sure its a proper air conditioner and not one of those ones you have to fill with water or something.

One of these ?

I am also thinking about getting one... My room is HOT!

Plus I get my 20% off at homebase :D

Yeah that's the one and it does a good job, you can set the air temp you wish to maintain and the air can come out at around 15c even though it says 16c is the lowest, the higher the btu is the more power/air that's cooled at once i think.

I saved quite a bit when i bought one too! :D

Thanks for the link!

When it says max room area 20m2, that's just the floor layout right? I always remember doing room area in m3? Been a while since I was at school...

Ah, the only problem is you have to empty the water and you have to have a pipe sticking out of the window.

I think you have to do that with all of these types of air con unit?
Unless you get one that's fitted to the wall hooked into the mains water supply..

Edit, don't see why you'd have to empty the water? Just fill it up..?

I have that unit right next to me. Had it for a year now, it's great.

So it actually works?

Unlike this Air Cooler thing I bought last year for £40... You have to fill it with water and it all it does is smell.

My mistake

Yes it works, it's a proper air conditioner.

I also have one of the air coolers you talk of and it does not work. Only really works when a room is really hot and it has been on for 3 hours. I.e turn it on 3 hours before you go to bed and it'll keep the room ok.

That £170 hombase air con unit it great though.

Cool... Might buy one in the near future, thanks!

Yeah that can be annoying depending on where you want it, the hose could be a bit longer too.

edit: not had to empty the water once either!

Same here but you should empty it anyway at the end of the season and give it a clean around the inlet if needed, of course i forgot to last year but it seems fine anyway.

The big £170 air con unit does have to be periodically emptied of water. It collects it somehow via evil magic.

However I use mine a lot and over the last year the light that tells me to empty the water has not come on once.
