Airfix

Nice models, and i agree weathering and some paint chipping effects on the leading edges, props, and the foot plates where the pilot would stand and walk to get into the cockpit would bring them to life.

Well all of those models have been weathered:), just done very subtlely so its not "in yer face" as it were. I've literally seen thousands of models over the years and lots of them were overdone when weathered. I tend to go for an almost "underdone" appearance, where you have to get closer to see it. i always preshade the kit panel lines, spray the basecoat , cover in an aqueous based wash, then post shade after that. On the grey/ green mustang you can see variations of shade in the green which was done with a wash and then again gone over using pastels ground to a powder, also on the tail you can see the tonal changes on the tailplane. Like I said, its subtle and I prefer it to how the F/A18-D turned out, that to me is way over top and the panel lines are far to defined, and that was done in exactly the same way although it really needed to be "toned down" a bit with some over spraying done in the base colour. Still, you live and learn.

Ahh i see the weathering now that i look at it more, nicely done actually..Im just used to seeing pretty worn WW2 birds, rather than the cleaner more crisp ones..I know the modern day jets are kept quite clean so you never see much on them.

Anyway i really should get back to my builds soon
Tanks
Tamiya M26 Pershing with the Super Pershing conversion kit
Dragon M26 Pershing
Revell M46 Patton
Tamiya Chieftain Mk5 - taking quite a lot of scratch build to actually get it into a mk5 spec :(
Trumpeter Challenger 2 Iraq

Tamiya cars
Honda NSX
Skyline R33
Skyline R34
Skyline R35
XJ220
Mclaren MP4/5B F1 car

Planes
Airfix Avro Vulcan
Tamiya Lancaster Dam Buster
Revell Avro Lancaster Mk.I/III + Spit + Hurricane + 3 Stukas and 2 BF109E's (for a hanging display)
Revell Typhoon
Revell Tornado

Im sure theres more kicking around somewhere but i dont remember where i put the boxes lol - Anyways All of the above are 80% complete, most need final assembly and the bodys painted and decals applied

When i grab them out in a few days ill grab a few snaps of the interesting ones - Im quite a slow modeller aswell, eg the Revell Typhoon has been underway for almost 2 years lol along with the Tornado.

Loving the Mustang

I have been a lazy boy this year with this one being my only attempt.

Will need to get my finger out as I have been buying not building this year.

Not into models myself but just been browsing through this thread and there's some fantastic work, well done chaps. Suppose making a model should be on my "things to do before you die" list but I'd be absolutely tripe at painting which would put me off considerably.

Trying to work out what that is, Destroyer of some sort, possibly a Fletcher? US?

Oh while im here, i still have trouble mixing paints for the Airbrush, cant seem to get them spray well, im using Revell Acrylics (Aqua) mixing with distilled water, with a borderline ratio of 50/50, yet they dont seem to spray well at any ratio's to be honest . Any tips?

How much pressure are you putting through the airbrush? Sounds like it could be clogged up. I had that problem with the Revell paints. Problem with acrylics, they dry so quickly. Before you can change colours they often dry up and clog up! You need to be fairly liberal with the airbrush cleaner.

Well for a start you've got the paint far too thick to spray properly, the correct ratio (ballpark figure, starting point, etc) is nearer 75% distilled water and 25% paint, and thats an average. if the paint you're using is fairly thick to start with, like say, citadel paints, you can get the mix nearer to 90/10.
I mainly use Tamiya acrylic gloss paint, all the primary colors plus black and white and mix me own colours together. the advantage with this is you only need a set number of paint colours so its cheaper. As a dilutant I use 100% isopropyl alcohol mixed with the paint in the afforementioned ratios. I've tried diluting the IPA with water at about 50/50 when spraying things like Citadel metallics.
The big issue here is that providing the paint is reasonably "small grained" to start with, theres less chance of the airbrush clogging and this is true of gloss paint of which the granules are 10 microns wide as opposed to matt paint where they're about 40 microns wide, thats one of the reasons it can be a pain when spraying matt paint 'frinstance.
I've never used revel's paints, are they matt, satin, gloss?

Well I'm fairly new to the airbrush scene, I normally just hairystick them, but bigger models were becoming harder to keep even, So anyway all my revells are Matt as they cover brilliantly. I've been thinking of moving to tamiya paints but what do you thin them with.

I'm still in the process of making my 1/350 scale Bismark model that my missus got me for my birthday. I used to make a lot of planes when I was younger, but this is my first attempt at a ship.

Either Tamiya thinners (which is IPA with a bit of water and retardant which slows the drying process down a bit) or IPA bought online or from a chemist (if they'll let you have it, some are a bit wary of someone wanting a litre bottle of the stuff). Online is your best bet, VERY much cheaper doing it that way. Just bung a search in fleabay 'frinstance under IPA and it should give you loads of alternatives.
I can thoroughly reommend tamiya acrylics, lovely paint to work with as is Gunze sangyo also whose varnishes are top notch imho.

Incidentally, what make and type of airbrush do you have?

Its a fairly generic double action, got decent reviews for a starter kit, it also came with a tiny weeny compressor..Expo something or other, I only paid 65 for the lot rrp was 120.
