Think my AirPod Max are dead. :( I can't charge them, I do get the charging light on if I put a bit of pressure on the cable so I think it's a duff charging port.

I guess I have few options. Ask Apple to help, claim not fit for purpose. Think I bought them early 2021 so not even 4 years old yet. Or I could change the charging port myself.

Is there any fluff or gunk in the port? It happened to my brothers phone and they cleaned it out and it worked fine.

Probably clutching at straws but worth a mention.

I can feel the port rocking slightly. I do recall my 3 year old might have stepped on them when they are charging. My fault for charging them on the floor I guess. I've just been looking around at replacement parts and they seem difficult to get from the same supplier, plus I have no idea what actually needs changing internally. Also, the headband is pretty worn. Might be new battery, logic board (or boards), headband, charging port etc. The cost soon mounts up. They've done well, used pretty much daily, thrown in laptop bags, travelled around the world etc.

I've taken advantage of Amazon's pay in 5 with 0% interest and ordered a new USB-C set to arrive tomorrow. I'll sell these on here or Marketplace for £50 as spares or repair. Can't be bothered driving to Apple.

Did some more searching, scouring through posts on Reddit etc. I read that if you request Apple for a battery replacement service, you get a refurbished pair back and not the pair you sent in. I've just gone through live chat, and had a battery replacement approved for a total cost of £86.44. Will see what I get back after I've sent them in. If I get a refurb pair back I'll likely return the Amazon ones, or gift the replacement to my wife.

Return box arrived on Wednesday, dropped it off at RM yesterday, they got it today, inspected it, have apparently carried out the repair and sent it back. Will see what turns up.

AirPods returned. They're basically a refurbished set. They've replaced both ear cups, and the headband, new device serial number albeit still Lightning. The only original item is the cushions which you don't send back. I'm In two minds what to do now.

What I failed to mention is I did open them up myself but soon gave up as the ribbon cables were so frail they broke with the slightest touch. Which means if anyone here has an old/knackered set, speak to Apple Support and ask for battery replacement and you'll get a refurbished set.

Have you got a need for the USB C ones? You could save a hell of a lot for an otherwise identical device

No, not really, my wife does have XM5's but I think she prefers the AirPods Max due to how much easier they are to pair/switch. Will speak to her tonight and see if she wants my old set, if not might return the USB-C ones and buy some replacement ear cushions as the ones I have are quite old.

I was sat on a bench whilst walking the dog yesterday with my Gen2 air pod pros and it really made me want a set of APM I just feel a bit hesitant buying a pair now when they should have a new one soon-ish(?)

I've decided to send the Amazon ones back for a refund. Whilst the wife did like the idea of using them, she's more than happy with her XM5's despite the fact they aren't quite as quick to move between devices. Plus, I can't help shake the feeling that Apple will update the Max's as now with the XM6 out (and others) you kind of get the feeling they'll do a proper update to them.

They would definitely bring a new update out if you kept hold of them past return date.

I really hope so they do bring out a new gen. I’m really swaying whether to get a pair. I was very close to getting one but wasn’t offered the 0% 5 payments that you got. Otherwise I’d be using them now.

I’ve held off this long…..

Ha, true.

Now I'm wondering if I'm evil/brave enough to return the new set with the used ear cushions.

I'm not one for rumours, in fact I despise them for the most part - but saw this on reddit and thought 'dammit Chris'

That'd have been a year earlier before you returned those.

2027.... Urgh. I love my Gen 2 AirPod Pros but I want something a bit more immersive when I'm out and about alone. I just really, really loathe the idea of paying full price on older hardware, despite how good they sound.

Maybe if I see a compelling sale price.

Ha. I guess it's no surprise, as good as the Max's are, other headsets are ahead... pun intended.

I mean, if I was buying now, and unless I was deep in Apple's ecosystem, my money would be going on the XM6's.

They ~£100 cheaper, and no doubt there'll be some offers on them. I only went for the replacement Max's due to Amazon's 0% offer, kinda made it a no brainer. But they've been returned now, just dropped them off.
