Massdrop have done a deal with AKG to produce a limited run of 6000 pairs of a new model called the AKG K7XX.

Details are sketchy but they are rumoured to be based on the 65th Anniversary model with closely matched drivers, no headband bumps, an all black finish and a sale price of just $200. :eek:

The first drop is going to be 2000 units and is scheduled to start in the next week.

After VAT and RM charges you're looking at £160.

These could be based on any cheapo AKG, need close inspection before it catches my interest.
 
So do you reckon it will be a step up from the Q701? Given the RRP of Q701s I don't think it will be a step up. Maybe in build quality but not SQ given the info already posted.

I just want that damn headband!

So, how about the sound? AKG has definitely tweaked these compared to the old stuff. There's mention of a 3dB bass increase which is easily noticeable and welcome. There's talk of precisely matched drivers.

The 3dB boost was evident on the previous Annie too though and was due to the memory foam earpads so you'd get the same boost using those pads on other models.

By all accounts everything I'm reading does seem to suggest it's an amalgamation of all the bits of various x7xx headphones in one headphone thus dubbed the K7XX - This makes sense given the name of these too. I'm betting there's less/more use of foam in the centre caps of the earcup on the outside and inside too which does control the sound somewhat.

I think I'll stick to my original plan of modding a piece of calf leather for the headband on my Q701 after dismantling the stock headband in time.

I just want the headband and build quality improvement lol...

Edit. I'm gonna order them. Call me crazy but Massdrop specifically state each driver is hand tuned and balanced to match the other for the closest signature and they've tweaked more than just the 3dB boost the pads give going by the description. I need to hear them for myself.

I paid £95 for those babies, would make sense to keep them I reckon plus I've put a lot of effort into modding them properly so unless I get a good offer it wouldn't be reasonably viable to sell. Plus they sound so good :p
 
If I wasn't currently spent out I'd definitely be getting a pair of these. They even have the memory foam pads, so really are a pair of 65th Annies for just $200 - audio bargain of the year.
 
Genuine leather headband too, I imagine these will feel more comfortable than any previous K/Q7** headphone thanks to that too. I'm order #105, going by comments the order number should be the serial/run number too. Neat!

I have a strong feeling you'd prefer the K7XX over the X2 anyway. I mean personally I prefer the Q701 modded over the X2 for SQ terms. Build quality is another matter however lol.
 
I'm trying to be good by convincing myself I don't need these but this deal is really tempting. Would need to part ways my with DT 770 Pro's or Q701's if I do.
