***AKG Q701 Official Owners Thread***

I run my K702's through an Aune T1 with a Mullard 6DJ8 tube which takes the edges off the highs. The STX with standard op amps is a little harsh in comparison.

A Schiit Vali bought from the US is $119 with UK plug plus $37 delivery but this does not include any customs charges or VAT. So ignoring any customs charge but adding VAT the total is $187 or £110, which is £5 more than Electromod are charging.

Wasn't sure how competition worked with regards to audio equipment but that's the same site I was on about. Their prices don't include postage though. For the Vali & Modi together it's £207 posted.

So in ohms what sort of amp do these cans need?

Agreed, I'm not sure if you saw my follow-up post where I essentially said the same thing.

In that example if that Vali was even slightly cheaper - say £95 or £100 it would personally make a difference and help perceive the price as fairer. I would still bet their margins allow for that sort of mark down. If I buy from Schiit directly I'm supporting the manufacturer and essentially paying the same price, albeit not supporting the UK business (assuming they are UK-owned).

As I say it's just an unsupported hunch that I feel the UK price is too much. That's all.

If you buy from them directly you are also supporting several courier companies, and two govenments. :p

:D

Well I'm getting the urge to replace my old Fiio e7/e9 combo and fancy a change. The Vali + Loki + SYS Preamp is fairly appealing at the moment (I'm also half-eyeing up the HD 600's too as well).

EDIT - sorry that should read Vali + Modi + SYS Preamp.

Tbh, from the reviews Ive read Aune T1 beats the Modi on performance (better low end, better soundstage) as a dac and offers tube rolling, a powerful amp and is cheaper - remember Schiit sell their products separately, so no cables are provided.

EDIT: dont know how I read vali as modi but whatever, point still stands and the point about cables is still very much pertinent.

Thanks chaps for the suggestion - I will read up on both a little more. As shallow as it sounds I do like the look of the Schiit gear.

I did see the Headfonia review and tbh it reads as if there's very little between them, although I can see the advantages to the T1:

Shockingly, my trusty Aune T1 sounds near identical to the Schiit Magni and Modi Combo. I mean it. Its 95% the same, right down to build quality and size. The only differences would be the T1′s tube rolling options and that it can be used as both a DAC or a powerful 1-watt amplifier and the ocassional track that seems to push the upper region more forward on the T1 than the Modi. Tracks like Michael Jacksons’ “Billie Jean.” Noticeably more forward hi-hats on the T1 experience by itself. The Modi is more solid, more intimate, and noticeably less broad sounding than the Aune. The T1 is more aired out and both wider and taller in sound staging by a small degree.

That right there is what is a little piece of ear heaven

Haven't used my HD650s since receiving these :o They're pretty good. And obviously my iPhones photo is much better than yours mrk. The finger in the shot adds 'character' ;)

How do they compare against the HD 650? I have the port modded K702's and am probably looking to get the HD 650's as my "lie back on the couch and sink into the music" headphones.

Less soundstage, vocals are really brought forward. First thing I noticed when going to the Q701s is the vocals are way more 'behind' so to speak, this is not a bad thing it's just different, everything is way more spread out with the Q701. The bass is slightly more rumbly on the HD650s. The HD650 are overall a smoother sound but I would not say that the Q701s aren't smooth either. The Q701s are a lot more detailed and it really shows best when there's a lot of strings in a track. Drums have more impact on the HD650s. The HD650s are a lot more comfortable to wear, honestly feels like you aren't wearing any headphones with those things on.

They sound perfect for my needs then, I want a pair that will let me lie back on the couch, shut my eyes and just drift away with the music.

The K702's have a wider sound stage then the Q701's and if anything are even more detailed - the downside is they have even less bass impact.

The port mod goes a long way towards sorting the bass out and it doesn't come with much of a penalty because the sound stage still seems big and the sound detailed.

Basically I want two headphones to cover all my bases and I think the K702 and the HD 650 are the ones.
