Alder Lake-S leaks

Who was it that said ADL/Z690 would be riddled with bugs here? I've encountered zero bugs so far and have been editing, benchmarking etc. Explain your words immediately :D

I pointed out the mixed core types would have scheduling and compatibility issues. If a thread is run on a core with too little/much resources performance will suffer. I didn’t mentions bugs in silicon in particular though, just pointed out how updates would be required and how complicated that would be especially with on different operating systems.

Essentially there are effectively two different processors inside a 12th gen Core since it has a set of performance cores and a set of efficient cores and normally this sort of setup on a chip means they can't work together as one but this is what Intel have managed to do in a desktop environment by use of a hardware moderator Intel calls Thread Director which middle manages everything between OS and CPU. Not much else is known about Director other than what Intel have made public so how it works is all guesswork outside of an Intel lab.

With regards to this the only issue I have found is the latest Photoshop where it simply won't load any images but that has to be a latest version bug in the code because rolling back to the version previous completely fixes it.

Games wise, none of the games in the list compiled the other day are games I play so not missing much there although a whole chucnk of them were for Windows 10 on ADL and I'm on Win 11 :p

That would be Jigger. :D (I dare say any reply will mention in retort power consumption or silly replies from Intel folks putting him off buying ADL) :)

What is your Puget Photoshop score and the difference in your LR RAW imports/exports?

I never mentioned bugs in silicon. Though we are talking Intel and they have a history fudging up pretty badly.

IIRC my post was in reply to someone saying they hadn’t wanted to upgrade over concerns of running into issues. I said I wouldn’t expect plain sailing with a design like Alder lake especially on Win11. I don’t think even the wildest optimist would for obvious reasons.

Well one fix put forward for a non gaming issue someone found was to rewrite the Windows kernel… something tells me that might not get fixed until windows 12.

So you encountered your first “bug” you are an official beta tester for Intel ;)

Hah, you mean for Adobe :p Intel won't be fixing anything to do with the latest Adobe release which broke something considering the previous version works!

That would be Jigger. :D (I dare say any reply will mention in retort power consumption or silly replies from Intel folks putting him off buying ADL) :)

What is your Puget Photoshop score and the difference in your LR RAW imports/exports?

Puget score as follows:
6700K result: https://www.pugetsystems.com/benchmarks/view.php?id=62392
12700KF result: https://www.pugetsystems.com/benchmarks/view.php?id=63621

As for Lightroom, exporting 50 full frame RAWs to 100% JEG max res:
6700K: 3m 3s
12700KF: 1m 8s

That means a batch of 1000 photos that would have taken me 61 minutes will now take only around 21 minutes

Import times were not timed really but I did note that generating previews were lightning quick and I have a USB 3.2 card reader too so importing was very quick too. It was too quick importing to not even think about timing it I guess is the best way to describe it.

My main issue with Alder lake, other than the fires they start is just the noobiness of their heatspreaders.

my second biggest issue is being associated with the types of people that promote poor hardware so poorly. I mean they can’t even MS paint properly.

Novel chip design + new platform + new Windows + old middleware. What could go wrong?

Non rhetorical question.

It's a new CPU architecture on a new version of Windows (to use Thread Director), using a new RAM platform, and people are willing to pay out of their nose to be beta testers.

And how many of you beta tested the initial launch of modern Ryzen and how many weeks or months did the issues go on for before AMD got things in order? :p

At the moment we have a few games that don't work on Win 10 (expected, no CPU scheduler...) and a few that need updates on Win 11 (game code). Nothing inherently wrong with the hardware configuration itself, the software has been developed for a certain thing, that thing has changed, the software needs updating.

Tbf AMD always seems to have a load of issues when they bring out anything new! Zen 3 had USB drop out issues that took 3 months to even acknowledge and then a further 2 months to fix. Zen 2 had issues on 400 series boards failing to boot which lasted a few months then Zen 1 had loads of issues with memory, let's not forget driver issues with RDNA 1 so I dread to think what will happen on AM5 with a new platform, ram and 2 versions of Windows to optimise for.

Absolutely, however a few important distinctions should be pointed out.

Intel’s track recorded of fixing issues isn’t good. In fact Intel’s record is terrible.

AMD didn’t launch on a new version of Windows with a chip required to straddle multiple builds.

The performance of Zen didn’t hinge on a complicated process interpretation system.

Zen isn’t as nearly abstract a design as Alder lake.

The main issue with Zen1 was the NUMA arrangement and passing through resources.
The key to avoiding these was motherboard selection and understanding the topology of the system.

All I can say is my zen 3 experience has been perfect, my rig has been on 24/7 for past 9 months, no crashes, no bugs. Still, I would like to try out alder and will get a 12600k.

Yup I expect most people have no issues at all but like with everything in life, those with issues often shout loudest so you tend to hear about issues more thne no issues.

It's all relative really I'd say.
