well accident or not someone needs to pay for the death.

Do they? It does need investigating certainly, but if it is deemed as a tragic accident then hopefully some lessons can be learnt to make it less likely to happen again in future. Just "making someone pay" is just vengeful and under these circumstances does not help anyone.

If it was a 19th century western it's more likely to be a shotgun or something with a wide spread.

I have fired a shotgun loaded with blanks and the force of whatever did come out was enough to look like real pellets were flying out. Was aimed at hay bales.

I'm not a huge fan of the phrase either but it does still stand in this case and someone, probably not Alec Baldwin, will be liable. Which is probably appropriate, if not the great outcome anyone wants because someone has died over this accident.

Guess it will be a little while before any of the details are released. Aside from a technical/physical failure or negligence, another cause could have been miscommunication or disorganisation of some kind, and I don't think that would necessarily lead to serious criminal charges.

Perhaps the barrel just gave out after lots of use and age, sent shrapnel everywhere? Horrible thing to happen.

perhaps they shouldn't use real guns on set when CGI is so cheap or use an actual prop gun where someone manually loads the gunpowder.

that kinda dumb stuff happens all the time, why don't have have a gun expert on set who takes the gun off these people as soon as they yell "cut" and ensures it's never loaded and is clean.

seems like they just put guns in the hand of random people without educating them on the dangers and safety precautions that must be ensured to keep the cast safe, and it's been going on since decades.

according to google you can shoot the head off a snake from 6ft with a blank

some crazy stuff has happened filming movies in the 80s they were filming an episode of the twilight zone, a heli crashed killed 2 kids and adult, 2 of them got decapitated and the other crushed by the heli

How? He is an A list actor on a big budget movie set. He almost definitely would have had nothing to do with the preparation of the gun.

Sounds like an awful tragedy. Someone in the industry commented that it sounded like it was a closeup shot aiming at the camera, hence why the DP was behind the camera and the director very nearby? Ricochet etc. Either way, absolutely awful

How and why?

Presuming no malicious intent there is only possibly negligence or manslaughter, both of which are likely to not fall upon the actor using what has been described as a prop weapon but upon the armourer and prop managers for not making sure the prop was safe (if you as an operator have been instructed that something is safe by the experts on safety then that is from memory a good defence against most charges unless it was obviously not - and most people including actors think that "blank" means safe).

It sounds like a really nasty accident
Reading a bit about it earlier "prop" guns that fire blanks are really not liked by many in the industry because besides the obvious danger of a gun that can still fire a real round, they cause hearing loss and injuries due to the gas expelled from the barrel.

It's not Alec's job to check the props or deal with safety, especially not inspecting weapons as that is a specialist thing. He isn't going to be able to tell the difference between a blank (a blank made to look like a live round for movies) and live round or see if there is something lodged in the barrel. He just gets them handed to him ready to go for the scene.

But he probably feels like **** right now because he fired it.
