Alex Jones..

A challenge to Twitter? Bwahahaha, you're hilarious :)

Some gems just from wikipedia -

'Gab has been described as a platform for white supremacists and the alt-right'
'The site has been described as a favorite of alt-right users who have been banned or suspended from other services'
'hate-filled echo chamber of racism and conspiracy theories'

Yep, sounds like a real contender.

And of course this is the problem

"Social Media" is seen by many as just that. A game everybody can play.

As a consequence many people believe (Incorrectly) that what they see on social media is broadly representative of the points of view held by the general population across the political spectrum.

Unfortunately, this isn't the case, they are private corporations with their own terms of service. Sure, As such they may well have the right to decide which views are permitted and which are not.

But it is a very dangerous right to exploit.

By choosing to exclude certain POV, the mainstream media is presenting a distorted image of what the general population might actually feel.

It also means that alternative social media organizations will arise to fill the void, which will also end up presenting a distorted image of reality (See Echo Chambers)

On balance, I believe it is healthier to allow all views to be expressed.

(And this applies to government legislation as well as the T&C's of private organizations)

Anyone heard of http://www.gab.ai looks like a serious challenge to twitter not that I use twiiter much.
I've not read into gab.ai however if you're looking at alternatives I'd go have a read/play with Mastodon, seems to making waves in a lot of the tech communities I read. Disclaimer: I've not used it, just seen it pick up a lot of speed in recent months.

Some links to explanations about why people like it (tldr: decentralised instances is the core pro):

I do, but you're missing the point.

When the virtual monopoly is providing a non-essential entertainment service like social media and users cannot use it without first agreeing to the terms of service, they have no grounds for claiming that they should be permitted to break those terms with impunity.
Buddy I never disagreed with them acting within their terms of service?

well "they" at the same (Facebook/Apple/Youtube etc) said the channels where band due to breaching a hateful content policy. To my knowledge they have not given with videos/media broke said policy.

Normally when a post, video etc is take down or has broken a policy, given a strike they list what was the offending media and what it broke and what the repercussions where.

See we let Asim18 say dumb stuff without censorship.
Seriously? I'm the one who's been warning about this crap for the best part of a decade. Also you don't let me say anything. I'm still here because I don't break rules and I am always civil and I aim to be reasonable and provide tonnes of reasoning - and also because at least 80% of the things I've said have eventually come true.

Now, I assume you're trying to say that PewDiePie is teaching children good things and values and that YouTube kids doesn't show highly violent and dangerous idea implanting visuals?

The fact that you are ignorant to what PewDiePie spews out to children (dumb crap, drugs talk for example) and how this affects them, as well the fact that you are ignorant as to what is available to babies and children on YouTube Kids, doesn't mean I am dumb or saying dumb things. It means you are in a state of blissful ignorance.

You still think his audience is children? they've grown up.

Then you have no argument.

Isn't PewDie that vile racist homphobic piece of scum? He did after all use the word ****** and now must be racist!!!!

Hilarious.

The existence of PewDiePie's channel proves there's no such thing as 'they ban you if you get too big.'

Interesting video interview between Joe Rogan and Jimmy Dore about the Alex Jones situation.

If anyone remembers the history of Dore and Jones they will remember they nearly got in to a fight with spit literally flying.

An interesting interview;

Joe Rogan on Alex Jones being deplatformed.

And you fire hitting the target.... That you set up wide of the target set up by others.

The size of the platform isn't the issue, the message(s) are what have the impetus. This message has been taken down and has backfired it seems.

OCUK is typically more intelligent and reasonable than other forums so this doesn't apply here (I hope), but anyone who thinks that AJ should be de-platformed is a damned idiot.

We've entered a time where the ability to voice your opinions freely must be enforced and social media platforms should have to abide by the The First Amendment or otherwise we're heading towards dark times.
