Alienware announces the AW2725DF and AW3225QF (worlds first 4k 240hz and worlds first 1440p 360hz QD-OLED monitors - launches January 2024)

Yeah, agree with others here. Had a BenQ lightbar that I used for years, found that when I changed monitor and used it on the Alienware QD Oled it just made those raised blacks really obvious, bias lighting behind the monitor was absolutely the better way to go.

I think some are misunderstanding the way I have this set up, like it's not shining on the screen, and in nomal daytime with curtains open or at night with the room lights on there is more front panel pink diffuse than this configuration.

This is now the ideal lighting for work/play.

Based on my experience, you still don't want any lighting in front of the screen though, even just the room light behind me on the ceiling is enough to ever so slightly raise blacks or/and cause annoying glare of the light so any lights I have will either be behind or at the side.

For general use it's not really an issue, especially when working at the desk.

Swapped back to the AW2725DF for the last few days and I think I've definitely found a slightly better way to deal with the eye strain issues I was getting (and even after making some changes they would still linger slightly).

I've done the usual (Enable creator mode, SRGB as colour space and brightness is kept around 45-55%) - but I've changed the zoom in Windows to 125% and it's like a completely different monitor. Suddenly text doesn't have that noticeable fringe and my eyes aren't straining to focus on it, I can read huge walls of text without any issue at all.

I'm definitely missing the added screen space compared to a 100% zoom - and even more noticeable in comparison to the 32" 4k monitor I was using at 100/125% but the text clarity is worlds better than I was expecting. I'd thought that I'd only use it for a day, get eye strain/headaches and swap back a day later but it's been a week now!

Definitely think 240hz is the sweet spot, 360hz is nice but doesn't feel like a huge improvement over 240hz, especially in the games I play - and for me 1440p is a more useful resolution to play at compared to 4k.

Edit: although it's definitely annoying seeing Alienware Command Centre try and install itself 3 times a day...

What's wrong with it being installed?
I let it be installed and now I can't even tell it's there and I don't get annoyed seeing it trying to install

I don't use it and don't have a need for it, why would I want it on my PC?

There's likely many things on your pc you don't use or have a need for.

The amount people talking about ACC I was assuming it was doing something harmful, that's why I asked.

On the subject of VRR flicker, I'm noticing it a hell of lot more since moving to a 5080 from a 6800 XT despite the substantial improvement in framerates, even after this past weekend upgrading to a 9800X3D from a 5800X3D, and it seems to be caused by microstutter or something like it.

Despite the lower framerate on the AMD card I just didn't get it apart from on loading screens/hitches due to shader caching so something funky might be going on with the Nvidia drivers, or other apps I have running alongside it. This with a change in motherboard manufacturer (Gigabyte to Asus) and clean Windows 11 install.

Granted, it's mainly in Darktide which is pretty janky, but it was fine before (even though I was using FSR3 FG). There are a bunch of troubleshooting steps for that game I haven't yet tried, but it's annoying. I do note that when I tried the 5080 in my mates 7800X3D system these stutters weren't present, but he has a AW3423DW compared to my MAG 341CQP (same panel but Freesync only). Other games are generally buttery smooth and lovely (although I have to use mouse smoothing in Helldivers 2 otherwise it feels like it's running at 60Hz, a common problem apparently, but again not one I encountered on AMD. With a controller it's smooth).

Acc seems to stop my screen turning off/screensaver when set in windows. Seems a bit of a misstep for oled. Obviously not an issue if you are strict with turning the monitor off when stepping away but I prefer knowing I don’t have to. Managed to follow a guide to uninstall and disable it from trying to reinstall itself every 5 minutes.

Weird, I have it installed and my monitor turns off as it should... I can understand not wanting it if it's causing problems like that though

Yeah, and the majority of things I don't use or have a need for I remove from my PC. When I remove them, they don't try to install themselves back every 2 weeks.

I understand that for some people ACC might be useful or they might not really care about it, but I don't think it should be automatically installed (or attempt to install) on someone's PC without that person agreeing to it.

Crap support from Dell. If your monitor goes faulty, don’t expect to get a replacement within a reasonable timeframe.

If you push them, they'll send you a temporary monitor as a replacement. It might be something a bit dated but they did this for me back in 2021.

My AW2521HFL (240hz 1080p) had a strange image retention problem, they agreed to a replacement but didn't have the exact same model available in stock at that point so they sent me a 27" 1080p 240hz monitor for a 4 week period whilst the actual replacement stock arrived. Then it was just a case of handing that one back at the same time as the replacement arrived.
