Alienware M11x

I can't imagine why anyone would want this... 11" of screenage is just too small in my opinion - even for normal computer use...
Never used a netbook then?

I'm someone who needs everything minature. My other laptop is an 8" Vaio P. The thought of a 17" or even 15" laptop does nothing for me at all!

Wow 8"?! That's crazy :p *Insert-knob-gag-here* :p
No seriously - it just does nothing for me... and the thing that this "netbook" has over others is better graphics power I presume... but then I ask - why would you then want to game on the tiny screen :p

See, for me it's about res rather than screen size.

The 8" Sony has a res of 1600 x 768, perfectly workable. The 1368 x 768 (I think?) res on the m11x is also perfectly fine. I have a 1080p Samsung monitor in my study with a mouse and keyboard to plug into this if I fancy some serious gaming. But when I drop over to the gf's for the weekend and she watches SATC with her sister, this little baby is perfectly equipped for a few games of whatever I fancy, running at a decent rate. You can hardly do the same with a 17" desktop replacement.

The size and feel of these is most like a 12" Powerbook (best laptop ever)... or pimped looking.

Also, come on 11.6" isn't tiny is it? People game on PSP's and DS's!

My reasoning is similar to wakinglimb. I have a 17" DTR for when I am working at home but there is no way I would want to carry that everywhere! This is for taking to work/friends/family for movie/music/odd game when there is downtime. My 17" is too heavy and cumbersome to do that, add to that a battery life of just over an hour with my DTR :(

I've used my 11.6" 311C for a while now and have never had any issues. It's a laptop, it's meant to be portable.

Played some L4D2 last night, it was silky smooth and lovely. If anyone can tell me how do do a frame rate count, I am happy to.

Was running at native res with everything set to high (rather than very high) and it looked so good, from my eye only, I think it varied between 40 - 50 fps.

Also played some a little DoW2, everything set to high, ran perfectly!

I dont understand these machines, they look great but processor seems pathetic in comparison to other machines, or am I missing something?

The 1.3Ghz CULV isn't pathetic on a laptop... especially on one with an awesome graphics card that only runs at 720p...

You missing the fact you can overclock them as standard right out the box to 1.73GHz

Overclock = Enable = 1.3GHz to 1.73GHz

Phil
Im guessing you're used to something like a 3.4Ghz machine (like I was). The market's taken a turn towards lower speeds and more cores; it spread the workload around and jobs are therefore easily carried out at lower speeds across more departments of the processor, you could say.

Type cl_showfps 1 into the console.

That's true, but the 7300 is only a dual core CPU... :p

My missing screws issue really annoyed me, Dell were so **** with it. I had to keep calling them and chasing them, to the point where I am now returning. Arranging a 7 day return under DSR was so painful with them, I spoke to 27 people over a 52 minute period, most of them just just instantly transferred me. It's a shame as I really liked the laptop to use, but the care taken with the build was so poor as were their staff I am glad I've finally done it now.

Thats Dell for you. I bought a studio 1749 and the screen was so poor I returned it under the DSR. It took my about 8 phone calls and waited 3 times for someone to collect it! God knows if they have issued the refund yet, in fact I should check.

Shame about your m11x, surely with onsite warranty they would just come out and replace the screw? I have used there onsite warranty a few times and always had good results.

Mine turned up yesterday, so far really pleased with it. No build issues with mine but there are a couple of initial bugs that Alienware need to sort out:
1. System doesnt always return from hibernate, just black screens.
2. After switching back from nvidia to intel, I dont think it properly switches the gfx card off, as the fan comes on a lot more often and looking at my battery drain, it is discharging at the nvidia idle rate. Putting the laptop to sleep and resuming seems to fix it.

Lastly I cant believe Dell didnt include the WWAN antennas the tight g1ts :( Installed my 5530 card and now trying to work out how best to route some antennas. There is not a lot of room inside!

recieved mine yesterday, fantastic piece of kit:).
Is it ok to leave it plugged into the mains while the battery is still inside, i have heard this can kill the battery cant find anything about this in the user manual

The battery stops charging when it reaches 100% also if you are worried and mostly keep it on mains you can go into BIOS and disable battery charging.

Bad news for mine! it just completely died! looks like the motherboard. I have a Dell technician hopefully coming tomorrow if they can source a new motherboard.

Totally gutted, I only got play with it for a couple of hours, now I have a nice paperweight :(

I really worry about the build quality of them, how can they miss things like screws etc? There is no quality control anymore.

Good luck with yours Ninja, hope you get it sorted.
