All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Well the rumours are that Dawson, Gardner, Kaboul and Chimbonda are on their way out of WHL. Bringing in two new players isn't over the top but I'm afraid we're going to do our usual trick of replacing mediocrity with mediocrity. :(

I having to agree with you here.

In an ideal and injury free world, our back four should be Bale, Woodgate, King and Hutton. However with King's knee problems, and possibilities that Ramos might not want him to stay we could do with keeping Dawson.

He could use the pre-season to get used to playing alongside Woodgate and we can go from there. Its obvious we need to strengthen the team in some areas, but buying players that no-one has heard of isnt always the answer. Granted it can sometimes work, but more often than not it doesnt.

Out of the four rumoured to be leaving only Gardner would be ideal for me. Kaboul could do with another season, Chimbo is a moaner, and I wouldn't miss him if he went, but until Bale is fit he is coping at left back.

Its the midfield we need to look at too. We usually buy midfielders in abundance, but as of late we lack quality in there, and really need a left sided one.

Even if he didn't want to risk King (logical), I still think you'd be better off getting shot of Dawson. He's rubbish.
There are a lot of CB's out there, many of whom could be brought in cheap.

I think Rocha is a better CB for example, but if you look around there are actually a heap of talented Portuguese and Brazilian CB's out there which could be snapped up cheaply.

Two years ago, Dawson's partnership with King was sensational. King provided the leadership, the speed and the technique whilst Dawson provided the determination, bravery and aerial power. Their partnership was the main reason why Spurs finished a dodgy lasagne away from a Champions League spot. I've never seen a Spurs defence keep so many clean sheets.

Since King got injured Dawson hasn't looked the same player. He has the odd good game but he's a liability at other times. He's got Senderos Syndrome. Dawson is still miles better than Rocha though. Rocha was a terrible panic buy. He just can't handle the pace of the Premiership and he seems to be Ramos' 7th choice CB at the moment.

The latest Spurs rumour is that Eto'o is on his way to White Hart Lane. Maybe he's put aside his differences with Ronaldinho? :p

I disagree. Your main reason for being anywhere close to that position was Michael Carrick. He totally ran the show for you, much as he does for us.

I predict united wont sign any of the players mentioned in this thread so far, and any players he does sign will come completely out of the blue.

For newcastle i dont think Owen or Martins will be leaving...

I would like it if we got Crouch, i think that would be quite good in terms of varying our strikers...

Other than that, we need a link between midfield and the front 2 or 3, and definitely need 2 good CBs... as always.

But other than that we are quite alright regarding we dont get any hideous injurys, which we havent had for quite a while

I used to love all this transfer business at the end of seasons but all the constant, lazy BS journalism has just killed it.... I've even stopped going on most football forums now, so boring :( There's no truth in even 1% of all the crap written these days, just bored journo's plucking things out of thin air and making it up.

05/06: 38 goals conceded
06/07: 54 goals conceded
07/08: 58 goals conceded with 3 games left

How can you seriously say that Carrick was the primary reason for our 'success' in 05/06? He was still learning his game whilst at Spurs and so blew hot and cold. Believe it or not, Mido got more assists than Carrick that season. We miss Carrick's range of passing greatly but Dawson/King's form at the back was as big a factor in our push for a Champions League spot. They were immense.

Newcastle United

Oba Martins is about to agree in principle to a 90,000 pound a week deal which will see him remain at the club for a further 4 years without a release clause

Glad to hopefully tie him down to a new contract, though I think the money is obsene, suppose Mike Ashley can afford it though

Gareth Barry to Liverpool is supposedly a done deal. No official source but from someone fairly reputable personally. Believe what you will.

Would be a good deal if we don't pay too much money - although I fear we will. Then again, Carson plus cash would take a good bit of the sting out of it.

If Alonso goes it'll be because he wants to. We'd have a lot of trouble replacing him.

It'll either be Barry or Modric I would say. The latter would force Gerrard into Alonso's position alongside Mascherano.

I wouldn't see Barry's signing as an indication of Alonso's leaving. Barry can play LM and LB as well as CM which ticks Rafa's versatility boxes.

Because Carrick stopped a lot before it got that far and also played key passes in almost every one of your goals but maybe not the final ball. Everything revolved around Carrick, be it going forwards or coming back.
