I'm not sure they were ever in the running. They had a bid accepted, but I've seen nothing to suggest that Dempsey was interested. He looked more likely to join Sunderland than Villa.

I guess it all comes down to whether Liverpool can fund a move for him or not.

If Sunderland manage to get Dempsey then they've done some cracking deals this window.

He is on the bench at manu with no hope of overhauling De gea without a major balls up. I would hope the offer of first team football may tempt him.

That isn't true at all. He's quite up for fighting for a place and it seems that it's still there up for grabs in the eyes of the coaching staff too.

What the hell is going on with QPR? They're now looking at M'vila. Tiny ground and tiny revenue how are they affording their wages?

arent qpr backed by one of the richest oil tycoons going, makes abramovich look poor iirc

liverpool want daniel sturridge on loan, chelsea would be nuts!!

Is that a joke? In the past couple years, Wes brown for 1mil, Mclean for 350k, Sessegnon for 6mil are cracking deals... 12mil for Fletcher... is not a cracking deal. 10mil for a player City paid 5mil for and was completely unwanted, is not a cracking deal, Saha for any money is not a cracking deal. Cuellar on age, past 3 seasons form, wage, not a cracking deal. Dempsey for 10mil or less is a good deal, though how he'll react when he has made it plain as day where he really wanted to be, when he ends up somewhere worse than where he was in a worse city with a worse team..... is yet to be seen.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised of Pool, Arsenal, or frankly a half decent team pops up for Dempsey last minute, someone should, in which case Sunderland are left with 4 pretty awful transfers so far.

berbatovs a joke no wonder more teams havnt gone for him

so far hes had deals pretty much with juve, fiorentina and now fulham and still hes a utd player

OK, cracking deals might have been a a bit wide of the mark, but certainly cracking players. I rate Fletcher, and undoubtedly he, Johnson and Dempsey would add to that team massively. Newcastle might have a bit of a job holding onto their top NE team status.

Tony Fernandez owns then!!!!! :D

He's the Malaysian Michael O'Leary, but instead of being a gypsy turning up to places in a cheap suit and knackered runners (saving all his money for his pot of gold), Tony blows it on owning a very average F1 team and a mad looking premier league club....

Yes, also the thing about financial fair play is, currently its champs league only, you could spend 3bil a year and win the league every year and risk not being in the champs league..... so QPR can spend what they make at the stadium and maybe scrape 17th every year, and not be in the champs league, or spend a couple billion, win the league every year and miss out on the champs league, ultimately losing nothing but gaining the league.

I think we could well see financial fair play bought in to the league, but its likely to be akin to the championship, if you go 1mil over budget you pay a 100k fine, if you go 5mil over budget you pay a 2mil fine, you go 10mil over budget, you pay like a 7mil fine. Basically like taxation, the more you overspend the more you get fined percentage wise.

QPR are spending money their owner are giving them, but for lower end clubs the tv money far outweighs stadium income anyway, in another year with new tv money a low end club can go 60mil a year wages pretty easily. It's not like they're offering 200k a week to the whole team. They'll make a loss but maybe not that big. They aren't paying 15-40mil for every player either.

What joke, he was going to Fiorentina likely because no one had made an offer yet in the UK, but when they did he and his wife's favoured option was to stay in England. Juve was afaik basically rumours yesterday, nothing more or less.

It's also likely not his fault its more Fulham probably saying we'd love to have you but this **** Dempsey is screwing us over badly, if he goes we'll put in an offer for you straight away.

With Dempsey Sunderland have a massively worse defense, a massively worse midfield and a massively worse front line..... Sunderland don't have a single player who is better in their position than Newcastle and with Dempsey that will still hold true.

Dempsey to Newcastle

I said in the summer that I'd love him at Arsenal but he'd be a fantastic signing for Newcastle, he plays wide mostly but can certainly play upfront, as Newcastle may need cover for the ACON and certainly incase of injury then Dempsey can realistically step in for just about any of Ba/Cisse/Arfa. Huge experience in the league, ever improving scoring record, intelligent player and 10mil. No idea why Newcastle pee'd around the past month or two chasing a 15mil + Carroll who would want wages from Liverpool matched when they could have had Dempsey for much less, for way lower wages, and who is much better.

This won't be happening. We are desperate for defensive cover after a few injuries last night. We need at minimum a RB and CB, and cover at LB would be nice. Before any of those are through the door then other deals will be done.

Dempsey is not a player Newcastle would go for. His attitude is poor, we got rid of players like that (Barton, Nolan). Think they are bigger than the club. Plus Newcastle would never pay over the odds for a PL player. We prefer cheaper european clubs who offer value for money!

Shame, I like Dempsey and he would be an awesome addition! But personally I think it's going to be a quiet day at the offfice for us. I just hope we don't loose anyone.
