Technically gifted is the term I would use. Excluding Scholes who's been getting on for a while now, we've not had any creativity in the middle for a long time. We're overrun with workmanlike, can do a job CM's.

I would say Keane was our last DM, fair enough he was more of a box to box player, but that was the job description in his day. The Makelele role of essentially doing nothing but sit and guard the defence didn't really exist back then. And since we heavily favour 442, we don't really play in a way that would accomodate that role anyway.

Yes we've 'never' had an out and out defensive midfielder. But how useful would that have been against City, Bilbao, Ajax, Benfica, Barcelona etc when we're being dominated in midfield? Fact is we've got maybe one player in the entire squad who can half play that role against lesser teams (I'm excluding Fletcher as who know when he'll be back and whether he can get back to playing a part)

If you've got players who can keep the ball then you dont need a defensive midfielder, Busquets for example isn't this loon that flies into tackles left right and centre he does what Carrick does; sits in front of the back 4 intercepts the ball and moves it on, only difference being against City (for example) Carrick and Scholes were giving it to Park and Giggs instead of players who can keep the ball as well as they can.

The problem we've had this season in every single game where we've lost out possession wise is that once Scholes and Carrick have released the ball it's the players ahead of them that haven't been able to retain it, whether that be Rooney or whoever's playing on the wings.

We really need to move away from the 4-4-2 though and play 3 in the middle; Scholes, Carrick and Modric (for example) could keep the ball for fun between the 3 of them and with the latter being far more dynamic could help link play further forward unlike looking up and having to give it to Park/Giggs :(

EDIT: If we did move to 4-3-3 then the signing of Kagawa suddenly makes perfect sense....

Carrick is never positive enough for my liking. Whenever you watch the best teams play they will play hard passes 20-30 yards from the centre of midfield along the ground to the strikers. The number of times he could have sent a pass that cut the opposition to pieces a la Silva is frustrating to say the least.

Instead of playing that he will wrap his foot over the ball, slow it down and pass back or sideways.

You dont know what he's been told to do though do you? I think Carrick's got all the ability in the world to play further forward (saw it at Spurs, saw it in his first season with us and saw it in small doses last season) but even after the game against QPR when he scored Fergie joked that Carrick's job is to sit in midfield and not to do anything too adventurous :D

He's the only player in the world I've ever seen criticise for passing it sideways though (which is a myth), Busquets doesn't get that **** :p

I think it's hilarious that anyone could think a midfield consisting of Scholes, Carrick and Modric is capable of winning the title.

Using ESPN stats, in the last two seasons all of Frank Lampard, Yaya Toure and David Silva have individually out-scored and out-assisted all three of Scholes, Carrick and Modric COMBINED. Juan Mata almost beats them and he's only played one season.

for the 10/11 and 11/12 seasons

name - goals/assists

scholes - 5/4
carrick - 2/4
modric - 9/6

total - 16/14

silva - 23/34
toure - 21/15
mata - 12/18
lampard - 29/15

Why on earth anyone would want us to spend the little money we have on Luka Modric is baffling.

If you want a DM, could Phil Jones play there? I know he's meant to be some amazing CB prospect, in the future, but for now? Does he have the discipline/ability?

He's meant to be able to play RB/CB/DM and CM, but we've only played him in CM a few times.

I'm not a big Modric fan either, though he would fit into a 4-4-2 better I think.

A team with the midfield of Carrick & Giggs won the title in 10/11
A team with the midfield of Carrick & Scholes finished level on points with the title winners in 11/12

I think it's hilarious that people rely on stats to argue their weak argument

Yeah, I realise that... but your post doesn't answer my questions!

He doesn't seem massively disciplined to me, but I don't know really! Ability... yes.

On to this Hazard business, if we do miss out on him, we better ensure we get Kagawa instead. Statistically he's better anyway apparently (in a better league too)?

Looks like the 5pm Announcement rumour might have being Cech signing a new deal :p.

Yep seems like it, watching SSN at the moment and thought they were going to announce which team hes going to next season but it was Cechs new contract which was the breaking news:p

+1

(whoever thinks Cleverley is going to replace Carrick - or played in a similar role to MC - is barking up the wrong tree also lol)

He is a box to box midfielder for sure, but I dont think he has the discipline / positional temprament to play in such a restricted position imo - maybe when he grows up a bit but not currently. Ability isnt in doubt , or potential at least.

.

Im sure you were fully aware that due to Scoles' legs, and Carrick's orders from SAF they rarely venture far over the halfway line , so of course itsunlikely to those two especially are ever going to match Silva /Lampard/ Mata for goals /assists

This whole thing is a load of ****. Yes Hazard has bags of potential, but what's with the countdown and all that jazz? I would love to see him in a United shirt but jeez, he doesn't half have a massive ego.

Either way, do you really think Fergie would let the player announce it before he does? That's exactly why I can't see him playing for us.
