All these games platforms

There's a plethora now, Origin, Ubi, Microsoft store, and whilst I don't mind incentivising their use with exclusive content or gear, I really loathe being forced to install and run every individual platform just to play a game.

So much so that I've boycotted every game that doesn't let me use GOG or Steam and that includes that stupid Ubi login that goes with Steam.

So am I a lone grumpity curmudgeon or does anyone else feel similarly? Should we stand for being forced into different platforms?

No, why give Steam more of a monopoly than they already have? Steam's customer service is dire, and it was even worse before the likes of Origin.

While the notion that Steam has monopoly is laughable with the amount of competition, and I do prefer Steam by far for its fantastic feature set and comfort, personally I have them all installed - Origin, Uplay, Steam, GOG.
I even used Impulse and Gamefly and Direct2Drive back in the day.
Hard drive space is cheap. Registration is free. When there are good deals, why not use them ?
And uplay and Origin have improved a lot. They look and run great for me, eventhough I still prefer steam and gog.

However, I am making an exception with Windows Store. Windows Store represent everything abhorrent about Microsoft in one neat package, and I do not want to support them. I might break if they discount Forza Horizon 3 deep enough, but that would be the only exception.

I'm definitely up for competition, and as it happens I try use GOG wherever possible, I prefer their ethics, pricing and actually owning my game.

It's the notion that I'm forced to use these platforms if I want to play particular games that really grinds my gears.

Paul, couldn't agree more. I've always found Steam absolutely excellent, and I will never, regardless of how badly I want to play a game, buy anything on the Windows Store.

I'm not to bothered about all the platforms, after all they are just online stores, but what I can't stand is having my friends lists all over the place, I have tried to convince all my friends to use Razer comms as our voip as that also shows what everyone is playing wether it's origin steam or uplay, not everyone is convinced sadly

This blind, stubborn loyalty to Steam is one of the main things that ****es me off about PC Gamers these days. The other platforms are 'adequate' (or better) and I want to reduce Steam's monopoly on PC Gaming as much as possible. I use GoG Galaxy, Origin, UPlay, Windows Store (only for Forza so far) and Steam. Steam only started adding things like refunds, reviews etc due to competition.

It is quite funny when gamers throw their toys out the pram and say they won't buy a game if it isn't on Steam. You're not going to play the Ezio series of Assassins Creed? Far Cry 3. Your loss; don't let the door hit you on the way out.

So am I a lone grumpity curmudgeon or does anyone else feel similarly? Should we stand for being forced into different platforms?

Surely if it is only Steam available, you're being 'forced' into using it. If there are alternatives you're not being forced to use one or the other.

Steam loading up with my computer i dont mind.
all that other garbage apps can go to hell

So disable their start up processes then.

I get everyting on Steam as love the platform. Will pay a little extra if need be (looks at Ubi games..).

However I don't cry if I have to use another platform. I want to play FIFA, I start Origin and play FIFA...

No tears are shed.

I remember when steam first launched and all the I am not having that XXXX on my PC comments, same with uplay and origin. Just don't set them all to run at windows startup
I really do not see what the problem is. lots of free stuff I have had fron both ulply and origin, free stuff is good.

I was annoyed when Origin made BF3 exclusive to Origin but I got over it pretty quickly and now I'll buy games whereever I can. I own games on Steam, Origin, GoG, Battle.net and now Windows store. No drama

I've always said that i'd pay more for a game if it were on Steam. Like BF1 for example, i'd pay £5 more to have it in Steam.

I agree. I hate all the game platforms. I refuse to buy any Ubisoft games even though they have a few that I really want because I had a problem with uPlay in that it would install the game but then the game wouldn't run. I don't want to waste my money on a game that might not even work.

Origin is almost as bad but at least that works. At the moment I only have Steam and GOG installed. If there is choice between the two I prefer to get it on Steam though as that is where all my friends are. I don't have a single friend on GOG at the moment. Although I do like games that are DRM free and I like GOGs business practices. They also have some really REALLY good old games available that are hard to find anywhere else so I try and pick those up as well as they are generally patched so that they run on the latest version of Windows.

I like Steam and GOG.. along with a sprinkle of Humble, GMG and Gamergate (which are just steam resellers anyway). I installed Origin to SWTOR, but uninstalled it once i stopped playing.. it's true that i just don't care enough about EA games (though i am tempted to try battlefront.. just for the star wars aspect).

Ultimately more competition is better and i thank those who do support these platforms :D
I'm one of the lucky ones who have only once had to contact with steam support and it was great.. i've heard some horror stories!

GOG seem ethical on the face of it but they do have a few problems.

One of them is pressuring developers to give them exclusive DRM Free distribution.

I find it funny that a lot of the GOG users say "Steam have a monopoly, blah blah blah" yet forget that GOG are forging their own monopoly on DRM Free distribution and it is largely going unnoticed.

Pressuring companies so I actually own my game isn't something I'll be complaining about any time soon.

Surprised how vehement the 'everything is fine!' camp is! Didn't say I love steam, or their practices, or monopoly. What I don't like is how publishers refuse to put their games on the most popular platforms and instead force us to use yet another different one if we want to play a title.

I use plenty of other sites to buy my keys, but I want them available on the most popular platforms.

What I was saying is that GOG pressure developers to NOT put their game DRM free anywhere else which is in effect limiting how you own your game.

The DRM free market should expand but GOG are restricting that at the moment.

Not good :(

Regarding Steam, back when it was Retail Vs Steam, the "Steam Tax" was worth it versus the cheaper but more faff DVD. Install from multiple discs, enter serial number, download patches, install patches etc etc.

Nowadays, digital distribution is the "norm" and as such, the business needs to evolve.

I have watched interviews with Gabe in the past where he has said that he would prefer a system where you purchase a game and the user chooses where you redeem it. That is the way forward in my opinion but with everything being so fragmented at the moment, will be a while.

GOG will always be niche as the capitalists will never trust consumers.

The day Activision or EA release the latest COD / Battlefield day 1 on GOG with zero DRM, I will post a full frontal pic of myself on here :D
