Almost bought an X360...

I remember reading something about them making a mistake with the coding on PGR3 regarding AA. There's something built into the 360 hardware that allows AA to be implemented with zero performance hit but it has to be coded in to a game from the very beginning and cannot be added at a later date.

The game designers of PGR3 said the game was too far advanced when they found out about this to start again from scratch. So it suffers from jaggies as there's no AA.

Something like that anyway. Hope that helps put your mind at rest.

As far as im aware PGR3 has 2x AA. If it had no AA the jaggies would be far worse than they actually are. I would say that the model of TV and connection type plays a role in how bad the jaggies appear as well. It was hyped that the 360 could do 4x AA almost for free, but to do that you need to use tile based rendering.

You also have to remember that PGR3 is about the only game that isnt rendered internally by the 360 at 720P so the additional upscaling may enhance the jaggies.

Lets be honest, once things are moving at speed in PGR3 you dont really notice the jaggies at all, i actually find myself thinking how real some of the locations look. The level of detail on the cars and the locations themselves is pretty impressive.

There is a well known issue that PGR3 is rendered internally at ~600p, with low/no AA. All other games are rendered at 720p, mostly 4x AA. PGR3 is by far the 'jaggiest' looking game to me by a long way! TDU looks far far superior IMO

For a game with the scale of TD:U jaggies are going to be inevitable.

I must admit though I personally don't notice them as with any racing game you tend to drive too quickly to notice.

When stopped there is certainly a level of AA used but I would imagine as the game streams (no loading times) it may be limited to 2x as the developers probably couldn't implement 4x in the time they had.

I wouldn't let jaggies put you off this or any other game you like the look of.

So you didnt buy a 360, because of erm,, jaggies??, are you kidding?

he must be a pc fanboy

seriously though, the gfx on the 360 are blinding. don't notice jaggies at all. however ive been playing ps2 and xbox games for years, so the 360 is head and shoulders better looking

If you play something like Dead Rising it's very difficult to notice jaggies, I also found it tough to see them on Just Cause and thats visually one of the best games ever.

It's a lot to do with the kiosk setup. My local Game's kiosk is laughable, it really looks terrible. But playing on my 50" HD DLP through component is stunning.

If you really want to see what the 360 can do, play Fight Night 3 on a decent HD set, it looks incredible.

'at the end of the day' the 360 will be rather jaggied simply because its running at what would be considered a crap PC resolution even in HD, the PS3 max res is laughable compared to PC as well. So there we go.

However I knew this and still bought a 360 because my PC would cost too much to upgrade.

I suggest you buy a PC. Then you can spend hours/days/months tweaking options until you have it nearly as you would like it. Meanwhile 360 owners will be playing and enjoying the game.

this is one of the joys of consoles, i get real tired of constantly ****ing with drivers/patches etc on the pc.

regarding jaggies, i've noticed some in pgr3 on my 56" screen but who gives a toss....still looks and plays incredible @ 720p.

but some ppl are never happy

I don't see how 1920x1080 is laughable, it's a pretty high number of pixels, compared to 1280x1024, over half the pixels again.

Still, as long as the 360 does some better AA, then jaggies shouldn't be too much of a problem, and as you've said, the only thing that'll cause problems really is the limitation of the resolution.

are you sure it isn't 1080x something not 1920x1080? Any 360 title AA or not to me still has jaggies more than a PC game.

The PS3 definaltely is 1920x1080, 1080p to be exact. It's the big pimping point for Sony. Not all games will be that res, as you need a huge amount of power to get it running that res, but all games will be at least 720p.

so it's not 1080x 480p? I always though 1080i or whatever was basically 1080x 480 PC res? Or something like that anyway. Sorry I'm a bit drunk lol.

1080p is 1980x1080 progressive scan.

1080i is 1980x540 interlaced

720p is 1280x720 progressive scan

480p is 640x480 progressive scan

480i is 640x240 interlaced

So yep its 1980x1080. Roughly equivilant to 1600x1200 on a standard pc monitor.

I have a feeling my crappy VGA via TFT monitor (4:3) is displaying at 480p grrr.

If its through vga you don't have the choice of HD resolutions you just get it in the form of normal resolutions (1024x768, 1280x720 (best), 1280x768, 1280x1024 (best for 4:3 screens) and 1360x768).

Natively the 360 renders everything (except pgr3) at 1280x720 (720p) so this is the best resolution to choose however if you have a non widescreen erm screen then 1280x1024 is the one for you (or 1024x768 if your monitor is not big enough <17")

Forza will set the standard for 360 games with silly amounts of AA running at a sweet frame rate.

I've never been bothered by AA but have been surpraised with the amount of games that still exhibit them. I guess its partially because developers don't know how to fully harness the 360's power yet given that it took just over a year for coders to fully get to grips with the Xbox.

Games like Condemned, Dead Rising, Kameo show that you can have gorgeous visuals and gameplay.

The Kiosks give the 360 a bad name, i slated them immensely before i got a 360, once you play it at a proper length away from the screen it looks ace, who plays there 360, 3 foot away from a 26 inch screen?

I play mine on a 32" Lg Flatron through VGA and its awesome. PGR3 has a lack of AA though but TDU looks great.

Buy one! Only if you have a HD tv or a good vga screen.
