Almost hit a cyclist

In which case why misquote it?

I already agreed with you that the cyclists were in the wrong in this particular scenario, however your posts give the impression that you think someone being on the wrong side of the road immediately makes everything their fault when that couldn't be further from the truth

Indeed, I recall some case law from many years ago where a Dust cart was travelling slowly along the "wrong" side of the road.

Somebody pulled left out of a side road and collided with it.

He was deemed "at fault" for not giving way.

However (As I keep saying) I regard both parties as being at fault in this scenario.

Now of course there is a total obligation to ensure no one is overtaking and you must look both ways...

I'm guessing you missed this?

I am totally clear on the Give Way rules, that should be enough for you I would hope.

Everyone is at fault in the hypothetical accident that didn't occur. The van driver for parking like a tool, the cyclists for being on the wrong side of the road, and you for pulling out while gazing at the lorry on your right without checking whether anything was coming from the left... Except you did check, and you saw that something was coming, so you stopped and nothing really happened.

Quite.

At the end of post 40 you clearly state that you don't need to give way to the left if your are turning left.

That may not be what you meant, but that's what you posted, so I'm sure you can see where the confusion comes from :)

This is OCUK I am now going to spend 5 pages telling you that isn't what you meant, you are just wrong :D;)

I think we can see what I meant now, I think the debate is mute.

Don't really get this.

Make a thread about something that almost happened, but didn't, and get everyone to speculate on who's fault it would be, but nothing actually happened.

Agreed - maybe it's time for a generic 'Dashcam' thread, like the Youtube thread in GD to put all these in.

Well, except the one about maintaining a sufficient distance between your self and the vehicle in front such that, should they have to perform an emergency stop, you can stop safely.

:p

ermm my lane was clear... no cars in front of me, the other car was opposite side traveling opposite direction and cut into my lane to get into a parking spot.

Sounds like you need to sort out your bicycle brakes. I slammed on after a car halted in front of me the other day and stopped from 30mph in no more than 5 metres on a damp road. Yes, there was a little bit of rear wheel lift but mostly under control :)

The brakes all work fine and I have good quality pads on, but the limitation is in the grip of the tyres, they just start skidding after a certain point. Maybe I need better tyres?
