I used to host my domain email on gmail and then migrated to O365. I haven't looked back tbh. O365 is a much better system.

I use fastmail. Costs. But I prefer their privacy stance. Also gives you lots of domains to choose from. My main is @sent.com

Edit: And the email doubles as an xmpp / jabber ID. A full one, not the butchered Google Talk one.

Gmail had the upper hand while it was free, but now its paid Office 365 is a decent rival. Although Outlook web is still a pile of ****.
