is this very illegal?

If someone from a much larger website than mine, offered me a database of email addresses that have used the large website.

In order to help my small website.

Perhaps for a small fee.

As a very naive person, could i just say "ok" and never question it?

depends on their terms and conditions.

If it doesn't specifically state he can use those email addresses and details for other uses then you and him will be in breach of the data protection act and hence it will be illegal.

Ignorance is no defence in the eys of the law.

So if someone offers me something, it's up to me to check that the person offering it to me is allowed to?

like greebo says, if the larger websites T&C's state that the website owner can pass customers details to other companies then I would imagine you'd be fine

But I would steer well clear of this........ These things have a habbit of getting ugly

Yeah, i do agree. Always got the feeling this could boost my website by a few years, but like you said, always a bit dodgy.
And i think it's more a case of, this person might not be the owner of the site. Might just be a web technician.

Best play it safe!

hmmm
maybe i could go back to the site in question and tell them they have a leak for some bonus points........

This is a prime example of how everyone gets ridiculous amounts of junk mail in their inbox's, getting your data passed around without your consent!

Don't do it, I'm sure you'll only annoy the people whose addresses you gain :p

If the person supplying the details has the permission of the members of that site (IE they agreed to it in the T&C), AND has the permission of the websites owner then legally I think it's ok.

If either condition isn't met then it's not, and could even be criminal (if the addresses were harvested via any form of illegal activity - such as might be covered under the computer misuse laws).

As above as long as when the "large" website that collected the data legitimatley and informed the users they details may be used in such a way then it is in no way illegal.

ah, turns out the "large" website doesn't know their data is being offered for sale!

steering clear

Presumably you have an affiliation with the 'large' website and some sort of proof that someone from that website has offered you some email addresses for sale so why don't you contact them with that evidence instead of propagating rumours?
